6/19 saturday ride thread

Hopefully I did not miss the thread, not to mention I started it on 6/20.

I got in my 4 hour ride today as yesterday just had too many things going on.  I did 2h 20 of the 3 hour ABP ride on Saturday.

I definitely have some issues with the long bikes and fatigue.  At about 3 hour I really started to feel tired, I hope this is just part of the plan.

My ride was 220 TSS I did 2X12 @FTP, 4X12 @ 80% with the remainder 1h 40 minutes @75%.  All of this is above the IM power level so I know I just have to trust the plan and the work I am doing. My brain is still thinking that I need to add another 50-60 TSS on to that ride and run a marathon, stop thinking brain...

It's a good thing I have another 9 weeks to the IM.

  • Thanks for starting this Gordon.  I rolled out at 5am so I could make my son's 9:15 soccer game.  I rode with a friend for the first hour as he was doing 110 miles up to NH.  When we met, he says, 'this just ain't right'.  Oh how I couldn't agree more.  Crazy what we do.

Anyway, I rode for 4hrs, avg'd 21.5mph, IF was .75ish.  Felt good until the last stretch of road where I thought my bike was going to snap in half.  I actually screamed an f-bomb I was so aggravated.

Funniest part of the ride was when I was cruising along this stretch of road doing 25mph w/ out effort and I thought to myself, 'wow, I'm getting strong, this seems easy'.  Ha, ha, you idiot.  Did you ever hear of a tailwind?  I stopped for fluids, grabbed a fresh baked choc chip muffin top, flipped it and struggled to keep 20mph into what was now a headwind.  What a chump.

Made it back for the soccer game and all was good.

  • I did this little thing called the B2b, just a simple 147 mile ride with a few small bumps along the way they call hills

Actually after downloading my numbers from the ride I feel better, speed was a little slower but the heat was a killa.

    9:15 of riding time.

  • You folks doing HHH and B2B this past weekend just amaze me! Right On!

I did a 2 hour ride with a few intervals to test out the Post Eagleman legs. All OK. Today marks the "On" Day for IMWI folks, so from here on out I'll be playing in the weekly Thurs Long Run and Sat Long Ride threads! Doing so keeps me honest with the plan :-)
  • I started at 8:30am here in Dallas. Plan was for 30mins around the lake loop, then 30mins in the hills (x3), totalling 3 hours.

I was in the apartment complex pool by 11am. I was SHELLED! Totally dehydrated by the end of the first hour, was just MISERABLE!

Tried to make it up by going hard on Sunday morning, starting at 7am with a group of tri peeps that were faster than me. I think I did a much better job on Sunday than on Saturday. Then I went home and melted into my couch for a few hours.
  • Saturday: rode with my tri club to West Fork, a double top secret road/trail/bike path that is probably one of the most scenic riding opportunities in our area. I had plans to continue solo up another road for about another 3-4k of climbing but...just couldn't motivate. Maybe 175 TSS for the ride as is.

Sunday: Solo climb to Newcomb's Ranch on Hwy 2. Somehow, no idea how, I talk Joanne into meeting me at Newcombs for lunch and a ride home so I was free to hammer this one way. 8' PR from my house to Crystal Lake (~29mi, 5500ft gain, finished with .91 TSS) then kept riding. Total gain to Cloudburst Summit (7018ft, highest elevation of ride) was 7300ft in 42mi...yeah, it's a lot of climbing. Then 6mi downhill to Newcombs for total of 49mi and 240 TSS in 3:30 ride time. I think it's time to adjust my FTP up a bit, feeling pretty strong and climbing well.

So as I was climbing solo I two guys up the road a bit. I would start counting when they passed a landmark and stop when I got there. Gap was 2:30, then 2:00, then 1:30, etc. Nice to use them as a carrot. I passed them pretty authoritatively with just a "mornin.'" They looked pretty fit, one had on a polka dot jersey and I thought, "dude must have bought that somewhere, whateva." A couple minutes later I hear the click of gears and BOOM, these guys go by me and nearly instantly gap me by minutes. Turns out the jersey was California State Climbing Champion...yeah, I didn't feel too bad being passed by these guys. A couple minutes later super fit dude in black passes me like I'm going backwards.

Most of this was on closed roads and these were the only cyclists I saw all day. 3.5hrs solo, middle of nowhere (I refil my bottles out of a stream coming out of a wall, we call it Critter Creek) with nothing except the voices in my head. I don't ride with music.

Newcombs is a biker (motorcycle) joint so while I waited ~45' for Joanne to show up I just talked moto's with the guys. I was praying that she made it there cuz I was NOT looking forward to riding back. Winds pick up big time in the canyons late in the day.

  • I did a one hour swim at 6 a.m. with 3 other girlfriends... then had some down time but the route not good from the lake so then met up with 5 other tri girlfriends and 3 tri guys at 8 a.m. to start a 60 mile ride. I had plenty of time to get my stuff together so no stress which was nice. My legs were tired, that was all the was to it, but 2,000 ft of climbing and a warm day but not windy! anyways, I did stop at mile 30, got a Snickers and rode back and just had a good ride but noted that I seemed to be getting slower and slower!! so nope, I didn't pass anybody!! lol. in fact I was the slowest one out there!! la la la la.... reminding myself that Yes I was the oldest one out there too! and that I had ridden a century last Sat and they hadn't... and well just mentally telling myself to get over it, and keep pedaling!! remember how swimming causes a bit more fatigue in the neck and shoulders? yep it all came back to me, oh yeah. and the nutrition is a bit diff too as you start off depleted so this is a great workout!!! well, I decided to run that one hour... but really I call it a walk with some running, it felt good to be outside and I had the hall pass for the whole workout so at 100 degrees with some chicken broth in one pocket of my run shorts and water in the other, I set off thru a gorgeous neighborhood and stopped in a golf cart shack of a country club to get some water! dripping wet with sweat about 1 in the afternoon like a crazy woman, Laughing inside... I felt fine and chunked water on my head.. got back to the car, and thought to myself, Okay I am whooped!! no really I thought that by mile 10 of the bike!! ha. Later on that day, I went to my 30th HS reunion and somebody said "did you run today" and I nonchalantly said "yeah, I did run for a bit." smile. I was one of the few people there that others said "you haven't changed a bit since HS"...! so that was my Saturday ride!! m
  • My epic bike weekend became a little less epic on Sat.  After riding 2x40 mi on Friday (to and from work), I was 25 mi into my RR when I realized I didn't have it in me to do 112.  I was just tired, and I'd forgotten a couple of bottles... and my head wasn't in it.  So, I flipped it and went home.  Total of 50 miles on Sat.

Sunday was the inaugural Denver Century ride.  A course around the city, starting at Invesco Field and heading west to Golden for Lookout Mountain, and then south and east and looping back around to finish at Invesco.  Since I took it easy Sat., I was ready to go on Sun.  I added 20 miles to the course by riding to and from Invesco.  Hit Lookout Mountain hard (36 minute hill climb at NP=305 on an average 4.7% grade).  I'm surprised I didn't shell myself for the rest of the ride.  Took it rather easy for the rest of the ride and finished the 120 at TSS=352, IF=0.77.  Really enjoyed the weekend, but I'm glad I didn't do 112 on Sat.

Total:  3 days, 250 miles (275 over 4 days if you add in Wednesday's ride).  Good bike week.

  • Thanks for sharing all this info! You guys are rock stars...can't wait until I am on the bike. We just hung out on Saturday, put M+E through a kids road race and then had a relaxed Father's Day. My resting fu is clearly quite strong!
  • I'm looking forward to developing my resting fu.
