Thank You - A 2017 Wrap Up Letter
Aloha Friends ---
2017 is coming to an end and I know Patrick and I already wrapped everything up in our Town Hall Video - but I wanted to send a special thank you.
This year brought lots of changes to EN and throughout those changes, I have become even more aware just how amazing our community is. You all are dangerously intelligent, fiercely loyal and genuinely kind souls (did I mention bad ass athletes?)
You all continuously push the endurance envelope with so much inspiration it's magnetic.
I wanted to remind you to always keep that driving force and let's make 2018 another epic year. I love to think about cleaning out the year in thoughts and memories. I do this mentoring group called "Holiday Council" where we go through a course for a month and talk about the year and next years goals etc. It's really cool and therapeutic. We end up picking a word to describe what next year will mean to us, how we will stay focused. Last year my word was ignite. I wanted to make sure that everything I did, I did it 120% - that I set that BEEP on fire! That I didn't back down or do anything halfway. Throughout the year I would remind myself of my word, ignite, and it would keep me focused.
So I'm interested in a few things:
- What was your favorite moment of 2017?
- What surprised you the most this year?
- What would your word be?
- Goals?
Please feel free to share whats on your mind as we wrap up 2017 - I would love to learn more about you and also help keep us all accountable and focused.
Mahalo for being you and Mahalo for letting me share in the journey.
-Mariah

My favorite athletic moment was probably the Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic bike ride in Lancaster, PA. I did it with a 75yo friend and it was slow. He's a former racer, but he's slow now and it was good for me. I go on fun rides and all I want to do is get to the end as fast as possible. This time, I went slow and enjoyed near total silence for about 3 hours in the PA Amish Country. Almost no cars or machinery, as it was a Sunday and Amish Country.
This has been a tough year for me at work and I got Plantar Fasciitis and had to stop running. I had to cancel my only tri. I had to stop the elliptical as well and now I'm down to PT and bike only. It's kind of demoralizing. I'm moving again this summer with the Air Force and won't know where till March (and exactly when even later), so I can't even make firm summer or fall plans.
What surprised me most is that I can lose weight without working out as much as usual. I cut the sugar, added some intermittent fasting, and feel great. For the next 6 months, I'll be focused on body composition (want to lost at least 112 more pounds), trying to get enough sleep, cleaning up the diet (limiting sugar), and healing my PF. And lots of long bike events, since that's all I have now. To include a 4 day trek in NC with a buddy for our 50th birthdays.
My magic word? I'll have to think about that one. Maybe Transform?
I hope thats a typo and you don't want to lose 112 more pounds.... you would disappear!
Love your recap and I think your word is great! Excited to hear about your trek in NC - maybe we can meet up if Im in town!
-no surprises, just continued awesomeness, particularly at the 5 events I participated in with EN members! (PR 70.3, BRC, Al Camp, IMLP, IMKY)
- word - Discipline - on every level, diet, workout consistency & diet.
- Goals: Truscott's Guts, Gleason's Mojo & Cronk's Body comp

@Scott Dinhofer @matt limbert is still working for the team. He could have been riding outside in sunny (or at least warm and dry) North County San Diego, but he stayed inside today and pulled @Sheila Leard and I to the top of Watopia mountain.
It's people like you guys that keep me here, now entering my tenth year...Beside the Word for the Year: FunWithFitness, I'm really enjoying being a role model for all the folks who want to stay fit and healthy for life. My best moment was when @Paul Hough told me he can't quit, 'cause I'm still going.
@Leslie Knight - yeah, losing 112 pounds is quite a stretch goal.
- Favorite moment of 2017 - qualifying for the 2018 IM70.3 WC at Port Elizabeth, South Africa and calling my youngest son to tell him that it's his turn to sherpa.
- What surprised me the most this year? The speed at which I recovered from IM South Africa, then signing up for and racing IM Texas just 20 days later.
- My word for 2018: Haugesund. I've never been to Norway and my wife and I are looking forward to another Nordic adventure.
- 2018 Goals: Rebuild my running chassis and recover a little speed. Try again for AWA Gold (missed by about 400 pts this year). KQ in Norway and turn it down. Stay in the game until at least 70 years old...aka...keep up with @Al Truscott
