@mike drikakis

Here's your personal Coach Thread, as promised. This is where you'll return to post all your "coach" questions as responses; I'll see them and reply. This first post is here to guide you through your first year on EN, so you can always come back here.

As you'll see in this forum, I handle all manner of edits and changes.  So post away, know that I reply here usually M/W/F each week.

Power User Tip: Click the Star icon by the Title of this thread to subscribe, and you'll get email updates when I do reply.

Your Notes

I have done one triathlon in Sept 2017 and it was a sprint distance.  I was training for an Olympic distance but got injured and couldn't train for the last 8 weeks prior to the race.  I didn't train for those 8 weeks and still completed the sprint.  I enjoy the training almost as much as the actual races, maybe even more.

My current fitness level is active.  I have been swimming, running, and biking and least once per week since September but the biking has tapered off since the Minnesota winter kicked in although my bike is on the trainer currently.  Running and swimming are constant.  I am a solid runner but my swimming is not great.  I did 1.000M today and it took me 40 minutes.

Your Races

  • Muncie 70.3™ (7-14-18)

Coach Notes

When we talk on the phone during our Coach Call (Set it up here), I'd like to dig deeper into your injury and how to manage your training this year to keep you on point and healthy. I think that you have a ton to learn and Endurance Nation can be a great place for you if you don't mind digging around and asking questions!

Right now, let's get you dialed into our OutSeason Plan as it's our most important training plan. We can build you up from there, but it's a crash course on our training methodology.

For the running, please check out the Run Durability on GroupMe for some run accountability this Winter. And also be sure to consider learning about Getting Started on Zwift if you are into that as a training resource (we use it quite a bit).

Finally, on the swim don't worry about it yet. I'd rather you find a swim clinic / camp to attend so you can cram some learning and improvement right into your year without wasting too many hours just doing laps. Let me know what your options are when we talk!

Your First Month on the Team

You have quite a few things to do when you start up. There are instructions on the top of the website, but you can review them under Resources / Trial Member Welcome.

Your First Year Inside Endurance Nation

We want to talk about RACE EXECUTION and how we can help you get faster by being smarter on race day. There are no medals for great swims or getting to the top of a hill first — on race day only your finish time counts. There are many ways of being faster, and here are some of the resources we have to help you out.

- The Four Keys of Race Execution Video: The Coaches walk you through the macro level elements of a successful race.

- Distance Specific Guidance: Learn the fundamentals of racing Short Course and Long Course events, from each discipline to pacing zones, etc.

- Race Specific Pages: We have aggregated information on specific races from the internet, race reports and even our own coaching resources. You can find your race Master Racing Page section.

- The Race Forums:  You can search for race reports or connect with your teammates. There are sections for 70.3, 140.6, and Marathons.

Looking forward to working with you this year,

~ Coach P

Comments

  • Muncie. Indiana half Ironman in July isnt noted in my races section.

  • Super weird! Either way, I got it now. You have it loaded up in your schedule, but you'll just "train through" en route to IWMI due to the proximity of the events. Here is some guidance on how to Insert a Half into your Full plan for when you need to do it...and of course I am here to help you with that as well.

PS - Let's update your profile picture when you get the chance…it really helps the Team to "get to know you" a lot better.

You can do that by following this animated GIF (below)…good luck!

  • @Mike Drikakis

Great call yesterday...thanks for the time. It was great to get you on the phone so I could "get" your spirit and resolve. Excited to see what we can do together this season.

    My notes for you...

    • Currently has a road bike, looking at a tri bike.  --  Keep me posted on that process and outcome. Will likely want to get you some gear / input on how to put food and fluids on it, etc.

    • Indoor trainer with a road bike...watching TV right now. -- yeah, we need to get you on Zwift. The Team is super active there and we race / ride together quite a bit. Not only is the "game" dynamic, but it's very social as well so we can talk and it really makes the time just fly by.   You can find it online at Zwift.com and also our stuff about it here: Getting Started on Zwift

    • The Run - January has been really crappy. Only home 9 days / Lots of travel. -- Remember even a 15' jog adds up. A year of 15' jogs would be 91 hours of running...well north of 500 miles. So just chip away at it and do what you can!

    • Most concerned about the swim and the bike. Starting with swim coach Feb1 (for three months).  -- I think this is a really smart investment. You don't need to swim for FITNESS now, just skill. So you can add swims in as you see fit across the OutSeason® but I suggest you keep them to under 30 minutes in total duration. You can only focus for so long...

    Onwards!

    ~ Coach P

  • Hey Patrick,

I purchased my bike today, I went with the Cervelo P2 with the Di2 shifting on both the aero bars and brakes.  I also purchased the Garmin 935 today so it can link up with Strava.  Any tips on those items would be appreciated.   Thanks,

    mike
  • looking at my 70' run today. it says level 1,2,3.. is that the same as zone 1,2,3? im trying to learn all these acronyms
  • Hey Mike, sorry I missed this yesterday. If you have a question that needs the same the answer, is the red button at the bottom of the website or posted to the dashboard and someone on the team will answer you right away.

L1, two, three or designations for ability. No one is for beginner riders where at L3’s for more advanced riders. Your season guidance above should specify what ability level I want you to pursue, but you’re free to adjust as needed to make sure you’re getting enough of a challenging workout.

You were going to love that bike that’s phenomenal especially the DI hey Mike, sorry I missed this yesterday. If you have a question that needs the same the answer, is the red button at the bottom of the website or posted to the dashboard and someone on the team will answer you right away.

Connecting your Garmin connect account this driver should be pretty easy, if you Google search it it will come up. Then every time you see from your Garmin it will automatically posted to Strava which is fantastic. If you have questions, please go to the power & pace forum and the team can help you out!
