It's almost time for the January OutSeason!  The official start date is Monday, January 8.  @Scott Dinhofer is our bike captain, and I'm your run captain.  We have a great squad for the JanOS; thanks to everyone who introduced themselves and listed their goals.  If you're still out there lurking, please take a moment to introduce yourself!

A few do-to's before getting started:
We promise you a fun-filled 14 weeks of work!

  • Thanks Paul & Scott for for being captains.
It looks like Coach P has put together a great plan for us this year. Can't wait to get this party started.
  • So..... Not sure this is the right place for this post?  I've been away from EN for a while - and Geez - the site is so different!  Anywho.....
Just getting back to some serious training since having two kids.   I get up every morning to do SOMETHING before the kids get back up, but haven't ridden since my last race summer 2017 (Olympic).  I'm definitely excited but I looked forward to the first week - 150 minute bike (bike focus) on the first Saturday?!?!???  Reallly??  Not sure I can pull that off logistically with the family (I have to work out before the house wakes up)  OR with the seat time :)  I have been working hard to get faster on the run the last two years - simply because running is the easiest workout for me to get in with the family (push double stroller).  I am not uber strong on the bike (steady and solid, but small chica so I can only go so fast), so thinking I need bike focus, but thinking of changing to run focus because I'm not sure??  I'm signed up for 70.3 WI (June) and Boulder (Aug), and looking to ramp up to IM distance in the next 2-3 years to try to start kicking it's butt - thoughts??  Also, totally random - How do you add the fun facts about your self so it shows up with every post?  Thanks all - Great to be Back!!!

  • And I haven't tested :(  And it's Sunday!  Wait until week 5 do you think?

  • Thanks @Scott Dinhofer and @Paul Curtin!  Should be a fun 14 weeks!
  • So, I’m excited for this out season because I’m really out of bike and running shape.  Time to get the Vdot and FTP’s up asap.
  • @Leslie Sedlak -- all great questions, and welcome back!  Regarding the FTP test: consider testing on Tuesday in place of the regular WKO.  It's good to have an initial FTP to start the OS; not only to gauge improvement, but to have the right effort dialed in for each bike WKO

And yeah, that 150' on Saturday can seem daunting if you're not used to it.  Target a lower number for this week -- maybe 90' max
  • Ready for a good ole kick in the pants!  I've been slacking with the holidays and the family Christmas cruise certainly didn't help.  Thanks to @Paul Curtin and @Scott Dinhofer for being our JOS leaders!
  • Howdy. I'm Deb and coming back to the team after a great season in 2012 that unfortunately ended in a bad bike crash while racing Pumpkinman 70.3. I had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders and am working my way back. My main focus needs to be body comp. I chose the run focus plan because I am doing a marathon in May. This season is focused on FFF- fitness, fun, finish.
  • @paulcurtin is there a FTP test in the downloaded workouts for EN that I can use on Tuesday for my test?

  • @Paul Curtin and @Scott Dinhofer, thanks for taking lead on this. I'm in!
  • @Brenda Ross The Zwift FTP test which appears in the elect workout

@Leslie Sedlak To put Fun Facts in your "sig line", click on that little gears in the upper right of any forum page, then choose Edit Profile, then Signature Settings. As to the Long Rides on the weekend - IMO, don't sweat it. Just do what you can, as much Z3 time as you have available. You have plenty of time after the OS to put your Far on your Fast, remember? Also, I'd suggest doing the bike focus OS. The amount of running will be the same, but you won't be expected to have two days of hard running, just 5-6 days of steady running. Probably better for you @ this point. And you'll be doing a little more hard cycling, which is good if you can't do 2.5 hours on the weekend.
  • @Al Truscott - thank you.  Another question. I have downloaded the EN workouts, moved them into the workout folder for Zwift, but when I open up custom workouts in Zwift they are not there. Did I do something wrong?

Paul and Scott! Thanks for being our Out Season Captains!  I am doing the bike focus OS and will struggle to get the Saturday long ride time in on my stationary since it is just way too cold to go out.

@Al Truscott = as always, wise counsel. Looks like I'll see you at Miami man this year!

Time to get back into training after a very long layoff after this year's Miami Man back on 12 November!
  • Thanks to @Paul Curtin and @Scott Dinhofer to be our capitains ! I will need to send you some Please and Thank you gifts at the end of the JOS =)

I decided to go bike focused even if technically I should go run because I dont know how to ride a bike and without a good bike you cant have a good run!

    Lets do this
  • wowzers, great group in here. Looking forward to getting this rolling.. Have had a hip issue that docs can't figure out and getting my cortisone shot this week. Excited to get off the couch as I have barely been working out for the last 8 weeks and excited to build a robust training cycle for 2018.

we'll address things like FTP SWAG (Some Wild Arse Guess) in the bike forum, and many other great topics as they come up.

I am most looking forward to sharing the pain and accomplishment with everyone in both threads.

    Ride on!
  • @Brenda Ross So you got a bunch of files that look like this: 2018_OS_Bike_Lvl2___Wk01_Sat.zwo...?

And put them in the Documents/Zwift/Workouts folder on your computer...?

Then Opened Zwift *from your computer* (won't work if you open Zwift via mobile device or Apple TV!)?

They should appear in this screen, after clicking on "SELECT WORKOUT" in the START dialog box which appears after you have selected all your devices. The Custom Workouts option will be at the top of the list, you may have to scroll up to see it:

  • @Al Truscott - did all that, but forgot to unzip the files. Duh. I see them now. Thank you.
  • Looking forward to getting this rolling.  Had built up some good fitness, especially in the Zwift last four weeks.  Last week I had a wicked GI bug so hope I haven't lost it.  I chose run focused as that is my discipline I need most improvement on.  Thanks to @Paul Curtinand @Scott Dinhoferfor guiding this thing.
  • I'm in for JOS!! My workouts are always shifted by one day (I'm ahead one day), so I did Tuesday's workout today. I do this all season long so my REALLY long days are on Friday. I swag my meeting and work schedule that day so I can get it done while the kiddos are in school. Leaves me weekends a little better balanced (slightly shorter workouts) to be available for them.
I'm Run Focus since my run needs triage after building back from ACL revision 2 years ago. Doing much better now after stem cell therapy a year ago.
Can't wait to throw it down with this badass crew!

Ok, I've been searching for a half hour and can't find it. Can anyone @Brenda Ross @Al Truscott direct me to the actual link to download the Zwift workouts? Thanks. <NM, I found it and they're loaded!>
  • @Alicia Chase @Al Truscott
I gave up a month ago trying to find the EN Zwift WO.  Therefore,  I just do a Zwift WO. Where is the link?

  • Hello @Sheila Leard -- the main EN Wiki page on Zwift is here:

    http://members.endurancenation.us/Resources/Wiki/tabid/91/Default.aspx?topic=Zwift+-+Getting+Started

The EN Zwift WKOs are on the AppBox folder here:

    https://app.box.com/s/pgme43yqtyy11w2bvzdrbst4oak9a59s

The files are zipped, so first download them to your computer then unzip them.
  • @Al Truscott   Technically challenged right now. I found the link in WIKI. The files are downloaded to my computer in a zip file. How do I open them?

@Brenda Ross How do unzip the files?

I open Zwift on my computer. Then what?
  • @paulcurtin
After I unzip them I get an error message when I try open them.  It's ok - I'll figure it out. Just frustrated.

@Sheila Leard I dunno, maybe I have an unzip program already on my Mac. But when I got to this window by continuing to click on the files Paul points to above, I just clicked on "download", and a folder of all the files appeared on my desktop (or wherever your computer automatically puts downloaded files). From there, just follow the path I outline in my post above to Brenda.

I don't consider myself "technological adept" (or whatever the opposite of "challenged" is), just someone who's willing to fumble around and make mistakes, until I stumble upon the correct path. Case-in-point: I am currently being frustrated by trying to build a chart in WKO+, which like most sophisticated computer programs has done little to nothing to try and bridge the gap between the people who created it and understand how it works, and the fools like us who have zero programming background and just want their problem solved. Once I figure it out, then I'll be able to share some learnings I'm developing on the practical use of Stryd in training plans. Another place where there is little practical advice.
  • Super psyched to be joining JOS! I've been doing a run-focused fall, so think it's high time to get back on the bike. Still deciding what to do  with the swim portion, whether to join a masters group ($$$) or just kick it on my own. I'm also trying to decide whether to tackle Sufferlandia in February, and/or do a destination winter triathlon camp (see above..$$$) Either way, I'm really excited for a great season and to tackle my second full at IM Canada in July. Woot!
  • I'm in for JOS (my third and a half) and will be executing a little different plan as I've already been hard at it for about about a month or so.

Like @Francis Picard, I'm more bike focused (Zwift) although I'm running very consistently (albeit it at short, easy distances). As the weeks pass I will add some distance and intensity as I have a half marathon on the calendar for March 31st.

I will also be using the Vasa for strength & swim focus a couple of times a week and one of my OS goals is making it to my local Masters group once a week beginning around week 4.

My race schedule for 2018 is still up in the air mostly due to the timing of my son's swim meets but I've got a couple of hotels reserved in the event the stars and moon align for me. I'm positive I will be running two half marathon's in the Spring as well as riding a century [http://www.horseyhundred.com/] in May as they are local events.

I truly appreciate the effort of our Captains @Paul Curtin" & @Scott Dinhofer and am looking forward to sharing in the progress of the group!!
  • Thank you Paul and Scott for heading up the greatest OS of the season!  Looking forward to connecting with old friends and new and sharing in the misery and triumphs!  Let's get Crackin"!!
  • I tried to download the Zwift EN workouts on three different occasions and had no luck so I gave up.  Last night I wrote my work out in Zwift(very easy) and then this morning I went to open it and all the EN workouts finally showed up.  There was a Zwift update and maybe that triggered it?

  • Captains, Paul and Scott Thank you!
2017 Sept. IMChoo was the last swim, bike, run for me.  I have been working on body comp, weights three days a week and slow twitch muscles twice a week. Moving forward to Jan OS Bike Focus, the plan is three days a week with weights in addition to OS.  Now I need to explore using Zwift!   Going to be an exciting year!
