Jake Schneider Official Coach Thread

Here's your updated Season Plan, as promised. This is where you'll return to post all your "coach" questions as responses; I'll see them and reply. This first post is my best outline of how to proceed with your races, but you can ask any / all questions you want. So post away, know that I reply here usually M/W/F each week.

Your Notes

Raced all tri distances about 10 years ago. Completed IM Wisconsin in 2009 and 2010. Work and life got in the way and I haven't raced since 2010. I'm signed up for IM Wisconsin 2019. I haven't scheduled any other races between now and then as I wanted to discuss with coach prior so we could discuss distances and timing between now and then.

My 2009 IM finish was about 13:30 hours. I think 2010 IM was about the same.

My goals for IMWI 2019 would be:

1. To Finish

2. To Finish in Daylight

3. To Finish under 12:30

I've got 52+ weeks to get in the best shape possible and want to be really prepared for next year.

I haven't done any tri-specific training in quite a while. I do strength workouts 3x a week. I do HIIT runs 3x a week. I'm probably about 35# from race-weight...about 220# now.

Running has always been my biggest challenge. My body snaps into shape for biking fairly quickly.

I recently moved from Dubuque, IA to Breckenridge, CO so most of my training will be here in the Breck area.

Coach Notes

Jake, let's get a call on the books to catch up: https://calendly.com/pmccrann/15min -- pumped about your decision and hope we can help you get back to a more centered lifestyle that you love.

In the meantime, I have put you into our Get Fast Plan right now which should have a nice balance of intensity across all three sports. Works well if you want to jump into a Sprint at some point. When we talk we can pick more races.

For right now, just load up the plan and get to work...we don't need 3 x HIIT runs a week. We need to be judicious about how you are approaching your work, so let's take a long term approach and make sure you are on the right track!

We can talk more on the phone, but for right now, let's get to work!

    Additional Notes / Thoughts:

Listening to your body will be critical. Background…car accidents in late 90s.  Right calf…can be tricky.

    • We don't really want any run intensity for some time to make sure you remain healthy. Continue with TRP pace running until you have been running pain free for at least 6 weeks...then check in with me.

  • Hey Coach-
Just a quick update. Things are going OK. I'm working on getting back into the routine. New job is creating some interesting schedule challenges but getting 'em figured out. I will be at a fitness camp this week from Friday-Sunday. Still looking at fall races. Will update you when I've picked a couple.
  • Have a great weekend with all the training! Let me know when you pick the races, there’s no rush. Especially if you’re staying fit right now. That consistency does matter!

  • Hey Coach!

I'm still here. Sorry for the disconnect. Took a new job, a bit overwhelmed; figuring out my new routines and patterns. I've been active and staying healthy; getting a workout in 6 days a week; weight is dialing in. My strength is increasing. Admittedly, I haven't been going the full distances as the plan is asking. I'll work on that. The two-a-days right now are tough for me to get completed. Will also work on that.

  • no worries! just wanted to let you know that I am here to help as you need. Don’t forget to lean on your Teammate and me as a resource.

  • Hey Coach-

I've been thinking about practice races for next season, prior to IMWI19. Some of these races book up early and I was thinking that the sooner I have my season scheduled the better. Any guidelines or rules to follow when considering race participation next year?

  • @Jake Schneider -

no worries! The typical progression will be something like a spring half marathon somewhere in the April to May timeframe. Then you can choose a half Iron Man, or two, to place interior into your year. If you’re doing one of them, it could be in August. If you are doing two then it would be June and August.

Since racing half iron’s can get expensive, don’t forget you can also do cycling events in the July and August time frame as well to prepare and challenge yourself. Events such as the horribly hilly 100 and others. Those often don’t sell out as quickly and are equally as fun.

Feel free to post some options here in bullet points and I can give you some advice!

Welcome to your THIRD MONTH  inside Endurance Nation!

This month we focus on helping you become more independent as part of your growth as a Self-Coached Athlete.  Whether you are planning your season, preparing to race or transitioning to a new endurance challenge...Team Endurance Nation is ready to help!

If you haven’t done so already, please set up your Month Three Coach Call here.

    ** Training Focus **

We consider anytime in your season when you are more than 12 weeks away from your event to be a training focus. There are different phases of training (OutSeason®, General Prep, Sport Specific), but they are fall under the same umbrella.

Now that you are through your first two months of Endurance Nation, You have learned a few key “rules” of how we play the game, and you are ready to take charge of your experience.

    Training Lesson Recap:

    • No single workout is more important than your health, or your season goal.
    • Prioritize your “key” workouts each week, then fill the rest of your space.
    • We can always fix over rested. We can’t fix broken, exhausted or sick.
    • Have a specific goal for each training block - what is the desired end state?

    Taking Charge:

    • You should be comfortable moving your own workouts around at this point.
    • You can change plan ability levels as needed to keep yourself on track.
    • You can use the Test Week at any time to confirm a fitness change.
    • If you want to take a different path that we suggest...do it and keep us posted!

    ** Racing Focus **

Once you are within the final 12 week window to your event, it’s time to really focus. From key workouts to nutrition to logistics, there’s a great deal to cover. There’s a fine line between a great day and a day where you want a total do-over.

Key components of your final push should include:

    • Simulation Workouts to replicate the mental, physical and nutritional scenario you expect on race day.
    • A tried and true nutrition plan for your event; this is your last chance to lock it in!
    • Draft and review of a Race Plan to make sure you are 100% ready to take this on.
    • Optional rest as needed, and a defined taper in the last two to three weeks as necessary.
    • 13 Weeks out from your race you should be getting a race preparation email and an invitation to GroupMe - if you haven’t gotten that yet - let us know!

    ** Additional Support **

In addition to The Forums and other Team-related support, you still have the chance to connect with Coach Patrick across your first year. Right now it’s time for your three month call with Coach Patrick; and you can book it here.

Tip: Find all your other call windows across your first year, please visit the EN Staff page.

Be sure to check out our Three Year Plan in Resources / Wiki so you can see how we recommend improving from season to season.

    Coach Phone Consults

If you are looking for support above and beyond the traditional Endurance Nation experience, you can book a consult with Coach Patrick. These are billed at $100/hour and Can be on almost any training or racing topic. Please click here to learn more / get started.
