2018 Florida 70.3; 8 weeks to go!!

As promised, firing up a weekly thread to keep us honest, throw out some mojo, and get to know each other a little bit before we come together on race weekend.

Solid hill run this morning; headed to the pool at lunch, only to realize I had left my jammers at home.  Unfortunately, will not be able swim tomorrow either due to commitments all day, though I may be able to get something in after work.  Lots of biking on the schedule this week, so look at those downstream workouts and pace yourself.

Was looking back through last year's train up for this race, and it was not pretty.  After the out season, I really fell off, but determined not to do the same this year.  Going to work to get it all in over the next 3 weeks, take an easy week with a season opening sprint on the weekend, and then get back to it through race day.  Really hoping some cooler temps come back to south, because this humid 70s in February is crap!!!

Let us know how things are coming along!

  • Can't believe we are only 8 weeks out from race day!  I'm behind on swimming this year but will be ramping it up as fast as my shoulder allows.

    Mon AM - 1500 yards swim + 45 mins @ Anytime Fitness
Mon PM - 25 miles on the trainer w 2500 ft elevation gain.  I'm 2608 ft away from a Mt Everest in the last 30 days.
  • Didn't get to swim again today, but got the Z3/4 running miles in tonight.  Did 1 @ 6:49 and 2 @ 7:17.  1 mile WU and CD with .5 in between z3/4 miles.  Looking forward to being back on the bike tomorrow, and hope to be able to break away from work at lunch to at least get a little bit of time in the pool done.
  • I'm off the map again:
Tue AM - 3 mile run
Tue PM - 41 mile ride in South Africa with 2620 ft elevation gain.  Six days of biking in a row!  This one took me over Mt Everest (29,028 ft) in a rolling 30 day period. Today was the last day before some climbing I did last month would start to roll off.  I've met 4 of 7 requirements to get to the next Career level in Rouvy.  NO BIKING TOMORROW.
  • @Paul Hough That's a ton of riding; congrats on the Everest and moving up a level!

Solid 6x2' Z5 (1.15-1.2) this morning, with around another 16 minutes of Z3 for a 1 hour ride.
    3.25 miles run this afternoon.

Army is messing with my training program:o)  Command run tomorrow morning, but will try to get an extra hour in afterwards before work.  Need to study a bit tomorrow night for my first EN Podcast recording Fri morning with Coach P.
  • @Mark Hickman  - I'm looking forward to your podcast!   Meanwhile, pass some of your running speed to me.

Wed AM - 1700 yards in the pool
Wed PM - 7.32 miles run with effort on 2, 4, and 6  I wasn't feeling that hot after 6 days straight of climbing on the bike, but ran those 3 in 9:21, 9:06 and 8:50 ... not fast, but the progression was in the right direction.

BTW - I always hated command runs ... lowest common denominator training pace.  But if I was still on Active Duty at this age, I would probably appreciate it!

  • Thu AM - Strategic rest!!
Thu PM - Brick workout.  Did 80 mins on the trainer and caught up on some V02 by also completing another required Rouvy workout to get to the next level.  This one was called Cyclops Race Winners and was only 30 mins long but included 4 x 4 mins with each 4 min segment starting with 30 secs @ 200% FTP, then straight into 3 mins @ 100% FTP, then another 30 secs @ 200%.   Yeah, that hurt!  Ran 25 mins after getting off the bike.
  • @Paul Hough  200%!!  Yeah I'm not sure about that little workout; might have to throw in one rep like that during the next VO2 session to see how it feels.  Sounds pretty crazy.

Absolutely pedestrian command run yesterday for 2.7 miles at a 12min+ pace; I've never been in one so slow.  Got an extra 4 miles in on the track afterwards, though nowhere near the 2 hours for the day in the plan.  Starting my swimming next week, so will likely work in a bike/run brick after the podcast, then get to work on the yard; maybe some painting.  Prepping the house to sell, so going to be a challenge to balance the requirements.  After Florida, should be plenty more time, but likely about around then when I'll need to get it on the market.

I fell off the training wagon around this time last year, so going to be as disciplined as possible to set up a solid effort at Florida.

  • @Mark Hickman- you can chalk that command 'run' up as your warm-up walk for the 4 mile run on the track.

Struggled to get up today but made it to the pool for 1800 yards.  So that is 3 swims for 5000 yards this week compared to 2 for 3000 last week.  I have to climb every week between now and Florida.

Ran 4 miles after swimming and hit the gym for 45 mins in the evening.  Long run on tap in the morning.

Sat AM - 1 mile warm up in 10:24 followed by 10 mile cross county race at 9:10 pace.  7 miles of the race was on the beach ... sort of like running on sand moguls up and down but the beach sand was fairly hard.  But there were island trails in the middle and one mile had a lot of deep sand.  Slowest mile was 10:05 going through that mess.  Fastest was number 10 in 8:28.  Very foggy (humid) and surreal conditions.

Sat PM - Easy bike @ 2 hours Z2 between 55-60% FTP.   I'll push the hard bike tomorrow.
  • @Paul Hough That sounds like a pretty interesting run...not sure I enjoy running on sand:o(

Ran 4 miles this morning, then 2 sets of 90' rides.  One with EN group at 1000EST, then another one solo afterwards. Will roll a metric century on a flatish route tomorrow.

Enjoying a Normatec session now while watching the Olympics...need short track speed skating to come on!!!
  • Watching Riddick now.  Will also ride 62 tomorrow outside of Berlin.
  • 3 hours this morning for 65 miles on Zwift.  Still pretty fatigued from yesterday (mostly the sit bones;o); managed .75 IF average.
  • 3hrs 45 mins for 62.3 miles outside of Berlin w 1100 ft elevation gain on Rouvy.  I ride MUCH faster in reality than I do on the virtual course because the resistance on Rouvy seems so much higher than outside.  Not sure why, but I'll be that much stronger.
