Jim's 2018 Cross Country Bike Tour

Coach, I haven't checked in for a while so I think I need to fill you in on my activities. Since I had an Aug. 2017 partial knee replacement I've been focusing in bike improvement. Running isn't an option at this point but I'm hoping in lass than 2 years it will be.
I signed up for a cross country bike tour with Bubba's Pampered Peddlers starting in San Diego, CA on March 3rd and ending in St Augustine, FL on April 23rd. I had to set aside my Trek Speed Concept tri bike and got a Salsa Cutthroat Touring bike. Many of the 30 riders on this tour have a blog so I've started on blogger.com (jim's 2018 XUSA bike tour info). I've never done anything with blogs in the past so this is another learning experience 4 me. I'm used to long distance speed but here I've tried to train for repeated long distances (the tour does about 60+ miles a day with a day off about every 8 days). Breakfast and diner are proved. We camp about half the time and they set up the tents with air mattresses. There is more as you can imagine but that can be found on Bubba's website. I'll try to keep you a bit up to date on EN when I have internet available. I'm told it isn't always available on the southern route we will be taking.

  •  Jim, that sounds fantastic! Please do keep us posted so we can share this with your teammates. I am sure we have more than a few of them will be interested in following in your footsteps/pedal strokes. I will be following along!
  • Finished day 12 of my 2018 bike tour from San Diego to St Augustine. There are 43 of us with Bubbas Pampered Peddlers. We are in 1 or 2 person Tents with nice air mattresses half the time and in hotels, school gyms, or armories the rest. Bubba feeds us breakfast and diner each day and we average 60+ miles a day. There is generally a SAG stop every 20+ miles for a head count, hydration and snacks. There is a lunch stop if there are restaurants or Bubba does lunch. We have a pro chef and the meals are great...Just noticed alot of this info is in my original notes. 1st 2 days were all up hill. Bubba said they'd be the worst. up 4000 feet in 50 minutes (murder, I'm a flatlander!). But the worst for me was day three. Flat but rough roads with lots of cracks and bumps. Murder on the butt, hands and helmeted head. Now remember I must ride almost every day. Can't just decide when or were. Bubba gives us route sheets or there are Garmin files. After a while every road is rough, but ya gotta keep riding! Of course views are great. Big sky country, 100,000 cattle pens (smell!), miles of solar farms, wind generators, and farms picking our winter greens. Cut, clean, wrap, box and into a truck in 30 seconds!
  • What a journey!!! I can feel that Road in my hands right now!! :s Sending you smooth pavement dreams!
  • Finished day 15 in Columbus, NM. Just 3 miles from Mexico border. I started a blog at blogger.co (jims 2018 xusa bike tour info) but I must admit I ain't very good, but working on it. gotta eat but more later. Tks for the good vibs!
