Is anyone else Tired ......

Hi everyone

Im just wondering if Anyone else is finding this week particularly challenging mentally?  I feel like everything is such an effort ....just this week though.....still snowing, still not a lot of sun.....I keep telling myself to HTFU as we are going into week 10.  Testing next week.....  praying for the sun to come out and stay for more than 10 minutes....

It’s my first OS and I did the Run durability for 62 days with @Brenda Ross on snowshoes for most of it......just put the snowshoes away.  Some days I feel every day of 54....I get lots of rest, eat well, drink copious amounts of water, so I am wondering if my fitness level is stagnating.

interested to hear everyone’s thoughts and how they feel.

  • @Cheryl Turpin I don't qualify as a boomer, but am certainly feeling the same way this week.  I have zero energy and motivation is in the toilet.  I just switched from OS to 1/2 plan.  I admit that my sleep habits are not great, and that is likely what is catching up to me.  I had a TSB of -50 last weekend and it has hovered in the high -30 range all week.  No desire or effort level to put into weekend rides.  Also had a bit of injury this Thursday after long run.  All things add up to me tabling the workouts and adding extra rest and try again next week.
  • @Jeff Horn

i only posted in this thread as I am  54 but I have never done this OS plan before and was just wondering how everyone else was doing....to see what modifications worked for people.

Yes I have decided to take today off.  I have been running since Nov and not running today will be a benefit not a detriment....I have to remember that modification is
  • Hello @Cheryl Turpin – recharging is critical; maybe you're due for a break.  Going from 62 days of RD straight into OS without a down period can easily bring on a sustained feeling of “meh”

See how things feel tomorrow: if you’re still feeling flat, resting may be better than testing for Week 10.  There is no harm in taking 2-5 days of “nothing unless you feel like something”.  The triathlon season (RD + OS + GetFaster +IM, etc.) is very long.  These recharge sessions have worked incredibly well for me the past two years (my 2018 plan already includes 4 of these “unstructured” weeks)

  • @Jeff Horn – that’s a high negative stress balance.  I know for me that’s not sustainable, but some people can push through it.  Did you wind up resting today?

  • @Paul Curtin

Sounds like a good plan....rest is required I think....I took to day off and tomorrow will be the same.  I have decided to only Bike Test.  Run test is a no go.....I feel good about my running and have a Half Mary next month on the 23rd.....that will be my OS test.

Thanks for your input as I sometimes need someone else to make me see that time off isn’t a bad thing.....
  • @Cheryl Turpin for me it is watching my protein and upping it at this point by 25% to help with recovery . For me, I am working through whey supplements that are new. In the past this was key!
  • @Paul Curtin I tried my long bike workout yesterday and failed about 45min in during second z4 effort.  Took rest of Saturday off.  Was gonna wake up early Sun to get hours in but slept til 10am.  Felt so good.  Probably needed it. Gonna try bike again tonight but if I aint feelin it Im not gonna push it.  I like your idea above about taking an unstructured week Im gonna take that into Monday depending on how I feel.
  • @Paul Curtin

i think the unstructured week off is a great idea wherein you do  what I cheduled but dil back the intensity on the days you choose to workout.....

I'm dragging butt this morning, but it's due to the time change.  It would be so nice if the US congress would allow Florida to stay on daylight savings time permanently.

  • @Paul Hough I could not agree with you more. We're not farming. Arizona and Hawaii don't change. I'm going to a local dinner this week foe a new Congressman. I'm going to ask how we start the process to change it.

  • @Sheila Leard

Other part of the question...Are you tired?
  • @Sheila Leard - Arizona and Hawaii stay on STANDARD Time which is permitted under U.S. law.  Florida wants to remain under Daylight Savings Time permanently...that is NOT permitted under current U.S. law but I would love to see it change.

  • @Cheryl Turpin   :D Yes ... but I picked up a head cold. Almost escaped the winter with no illness.
The hour change affects my very tightly wound biorhythms.
  • @Sheila Leard I just read where Florida is abolishing Daylight Savings Time.   We could put this one the OFs as a topic
  • As to original question...weeks 8/9 of the OS are often when folks begin to feel the accumulated fatigue, and either act smart and take needed time off, or plow through and run themselves into a ditch. It's amazing what 36-48 hours of rest will do.

    Two other thoughts:
    • When I was still working, I got the impression that as we get older, we sleep less. Not true for me - I find myself able to step more when my body & brain need it.
    • DST vs Standard - here in the Upper Left Corner - farther north than Toronto and Montreal - going to full time DST would be a disaster, with the sun not rising until nearly 9 AM in Dec/Jan. When this was tried country-wide back in 1974 due to the oil embargo and subsequent need to save gasoline (nationwide speeds on Interstates were dropped to 55 MPH!), there were serious consequences. School kids were killed as they walked or waited for buses in the dark. FL, in the tropics - not nearly as much of a shift between summer and winter in in length of daylight. Up here, its 8 hours in the winter, 16 in the summer. "Let the states decide"

  • @CherylTurpin - specifically, Florida legislature has overwhelming voted to stay on Daylight Savings Time, not to abolish it.  The governor has not signed that bill yet, and even if he does, the action is not legal unless/until the US Congress passes enabling legislation.  By contrast, Hawaii and Arizona did abolish DST.  That is acceptable under current US law.  Florida seeks to do the exact opposite.
  • @Paul Hough

oh oh sorry I obviously read that wrong....thanks for the heads up. One would think they would abolish it.
  • @Al Truscott

Yep i am going to follow @Paul Hough and take an unstructured week this week.  I took asundy off and today as well.  Going bike test tomorrow but have opted not to do a run test this week.  I will do Thursdays ride, and my weights on Friday.  The weekend will remain the same.  Down time definitely required !
  • @Cheryl Turpin - to the contrary, we want more light in the evening than in the morning ... please, please, please get rid of Standard Time for this state!!

  • I agree that out season and cause for my fatigue.  Took the day off today,SO i hope this and more sleep will help.  DSP did not help with leap forward. I do enjoy later sunshine,
