Total: 04:22:41 - 2/69 AG, 13/482 OA

Highlights

  • 11' personal best for the Half Ironman distance
  • Nutrition strategy tweaks were successful
  • Race execution couldn't have been any better for an early season "B" race
  • Bike position is feeling comfortable and about as aero as I can get right now

Now it's time for a mini-transition then head down into IMWI training!!

Comments

  • WOW Jim, way to hit every single one of your goals!!! Nice job, and great pics on the Blog too! Looking forward to training & racing with you at IMWI!
  • Nice work Jim! You like a total badass in the bike pic from the blog!

  • Great Race Jim... I'm pretty sure you and the guy that won are the only two people I have talked to that said their execution at that race was spot on. You are definitely ready of IMWI. Enjoy a few days of recovery and then hit it hard to get ready for Madison.
  • Nice job, Jim!
  • Great race. Great report. Glad to share the day with you.

Have a great time in Madison. I love that race.

    John

  • Nice work jim! I'd love to see your power file here...love watching big doodes (like me) rip it up!
  • Congrats on a great race and thanks for the educational/inspiring race report Jim!! Good luck gearing up for IMWI!
  • Wow! Great work! Way to be consistent across the board, too!
  • Great race, Jim.  You are quietly getting it done and doing it fast.

IIRC, you had quite a pelvic injury, right?  If so, this is a tremendous comeback.

    Dave

  • Thanks to everyone for the kind and confidence-boosting words!

@CoachP - I emailed the power file over to you.

@Dave - I did have a pelvic injury. In December I found out I had a stress fracture on my pubic bone. No running at all until early March, then a very slow ramp up until mid-April when I finally started adding intensity. I was surprised how quickly the run fitness came back but I still have a ways to go to get to where I want (and need) to be to hit my season goals.
  • wow. that's fast. great job and congrats on the podium! image
  • Holy fast HIM! Awesome racing, Jim---congratulations on a well-executed day and a wonderful comeback!
  • Hi Jim - that was a great job! Just listened to Coach P's analysis - thanks dude for showing me up!  - and also enjoyed your blog and pics - you certainly look the part bro!

You don't look a big guy in the pics - one skinny dude!

  •  Jim- Congrats on your great race results. I am especially impressed given the little one at home. I have a 7-month old son and it has been very difficult to find time to train properly. Any "Dad" secrets that you can impart on us newer fathers?

    John

  • @David - Big dude in that I'm 6'4" (193cm to you metric fellows). Body comp/leanness has been a real focus the past couple years, but especially this year - just trying to find every free ounce of speed. Last year I raced at 170 lbs. Right now I'm at just under 169 - not sure I can get much lower than 167-168 but I plan to see what my limits are and how they impact my peformance over the next month or so.

@John - Have a very supportive and understanding spouse and do lots for her (Happy wife=Happy Life!)! That, and being very creative with my schedule. I do a lot of very early morning workouts (swim, bike and long runs starting by 5am). I also have a great fitness center at work that allows me to do most of my running during my lunch hour. This is all so I can help out my wife as much as possible getting my son ready for daycare in the mornings and with dinner/bedtime in the evenings. More importantly, I just want to be a Dad when not training so that's my real motivation in finding the best times to train. It's definitely tough, especially on the weekends but that's where the supportive and understanding spouse comes in. Luckily my company has summer hours which means I get Friday afternoons off so I do my long rides then while my son is at daycare and wife is working. That definitely helps give me some weekend quality time with the 2 of them. I'm a very goal-driven person, though, who operates best with lists. So when I have a season goal and see a list of workouts to get me to that goal I will find any way possible to carve out the time for the workout and the family time. We all know it's not easy and I've made (and continue to make) plenty of mistakes. But the priority is definitely on the family!
  • Very nice execution Jim. I'm sure you schooled a lot of little dudes with that time. Nice job and look forward to see what that confidence will bring ya for Wisconsin.
  • Awesome! Congrats Jim...that's a really great result!
  • Great race Jim, didnt' see the report until just now! Major congrats
