Yes, your weight DOES matter

I know in the Houston area we are already reaching August temperatures and heat indexes.  Given that it is hot early this year - at least in Houston - I wanted to remind everyone of the value of weighing before/after workouts.  I recommend weighing dry/nude before/after workouts to help you track your hydration levels.  There is a formal sweat trial protocol.  That is not what I'm talking about here.  You use the sweat trial to help establish a baseline of how much you need to drink and electrolytes to take in.  Weighing before/after each workout allows you to fine tune that baseline as well as determine if something else is going on when there is a variation in performance/how you feel.  If you have a crappy ride and are wondering why only to discover you've lost 5 more pounds than usual, then you have a clue what is going on and that you need to hydrate to be ready for your next workout.  It allows you to get to know what is your body's "normal."

Stay cool.  Stay hydrated!

Can we get a Wiki Worker to put this in the Wiki?  I couldn't find it over there.

  • So this I assume should be for a long workout, say saturdays ride.

  • Penny, good advice, I am weighing about 1.5 pounds more after my hot rides, yes time has elapsed so normal for me to weigh more later on the day. The runs are also being weighed and so far no weight loss on those either. m
  • I have not completed a formal sweat trial however I need to in the very near future. I do however hop on my scale nearly every time I pass by it, not because I am concerned with my weight in the traditional sense of trying to lose it, but I have been trying to get a better picture of how my diet and activity affects my weight on day to day basis. What I've learned from all of this is that I lose weight at a considerable rate during events, especially recently since summer has fully onset even out here in the midwest. I was not able to weigh myself immediately after my last HIM, however I did weigh myself immediately before and came in at 155.5 pounds. The day after the race, after having eaten and drank nearly nonstop for about 24 hours I was sill about 4 pounds under my pre-race weight. Recently the heat and humidity here has felt stifiling to me, I actually lost ~3 pounds in a 40 minute 'recovery' run. This morning after a hard 60 minute run effort in extreme humidity I was entirely soaked to the point where ringing my shirt was well... not pretty.

All of this seems to confirm what I already anecdotally know, I sweat a ton and I am perpetually hot despite being a pretty thin build at 150-155pounds at 6'0. When I do get cold however, such as in the water, it's usually to the bone, I'm always the one shivering in the pool at masters while everyone else looks fine.

  • Thanks everyone

  • Steven: Actually, I recommend it for just about any workout - including swimming if possible.
