should i race on a 72 hour old thigh bruise

I'm in Hawaii to run Lava Man on Sunday.  Olympic distance with open ocean. While cycling on Tuesday,  I fell off my bike or crashed it on a rather bad stretch of pavement and shoulder edge onto hard uneven gravel.  "yes"! my cervelo is OK :).  I have a 8x8 cm hematoma .  My hip joint is OK.
the injury is about3 inches below the hip. It is lateral, there is a red and purple bruise.  of course heel strike during the run is the biggest part of my pain, I can cycle no problem, and swimming is also OK. When I first injured it, I thought "no way can I race", but I limped through 4 miles on flat surface run at 10:30 pace yesterday.
I Plan to race Sunday, Any major risks I face running on it? I understand I may be slower, I came all this way, so hope some endorphins kick in.

  • I'm not a doctor and don't even play one on TV...   But I'd DEFINITELY race after traveling all that way.  At a minimum swim and bike and walk the run if you have to...

I'd Ice it a LOT over the next 2 days (and stretch), and try to keep it loose, but I don't think you're supposed to massage a deep contusion (but Google will know better than me on that).  Hopefully it will feel a lot better after a couple of days of TLC.

  • As you know, it's just blood. Maybe a few muscle fiber tears, but doubtful, as its a "superficial" contusion, not an overuse muscle injury. Not a ligament, tendon or bone. If it were me, I would participate, do what you can on the run (don't "race" that leg), knowing the pain is not from something getting damaged, but the swelling and blood breakdown products. The heat/humidity will be slowing you down a mile a minute, at a minimum, regardless of the pain.
  • Thanks, I do appreciate comments & support, my out season was planned with this event in mind for my future longer events to follow.  I have found on my pracice runs that pain for 1st mile, then not so much. I plan on racing tomorrow, today recon the course, rack my bike & attend mandatory meetings.
  • Let us know how it went. Glad you gave it a try.
  • Hi Brian, I was limping around all week, today no pain. Good race for me 28 min swim 1:17 on bike over 40 k & 54 min on 10 k with t1 & 2 at 2 min. 2:45& some chang, 4th in age so made the podium
  • Hot damn, good job!
  • Thanks Al, I did have a good day, came too far not to race, you guidance was very reassuring
