Training Advice Needed

I am looking for advice from some of you with more experience at the 140.6 distance on how to handle a couple low volume weeks of training. I finished the full Outseason and have been following the run-focused Full plan in preparation for IMSR in four weeks.  Last weekend, I ran Oceanside 70.3. For race week, Coach Patrick had me switch to the last week of the HIM plan. So, very light training volume other than the race. This week, I was supposed to get in an easy swim and bike on Mon/Tues and get back to the regular training plan by Wednesday. Unfortunately, work and family commitments had other plans for me, and my volume this week has not been very high either. Like a 2k swim, two 6 mile runs, and a five hour bike. I have no goals at IMSR beyond crossing the finish line in less than 17 hours. Should I look for ways to squeeze in more bike/swim time in the next two weeks? Don't worry about it and keep going?

  • Don't try to "malke up" missed workouts as you can just put yourself in a hole. Just stick with the training plan and do what you can. Plenty of people finish IMs and do well with less volume. You have fitness as evidenced by your 70.3. Trust your fitness and have a great full IM.
  • You are four weeks out from your IM, so your fitness is in the bag so to speak. Like Tim said, just move forward with the plan.
  • Agree with the comments.

I am on the IMSR plan as well.  4 weeks out means you have 2 weeks of fitness driving time left technically.  Key is to follow the plan and hit the long weekend work as written.  Use Mon - Wed to recover so you can drive quality into Thurs  - Sunday.  The plan considers this.  Time to start making your lists, write your draft race day execution plan and share with the others in the forums to gain insight and feedback.  Make your packing list.  Begin visualizing your successful execution of nutrition, pacing, and problem solving during race day.  Lot's to do in the last 4 weeks.  Stay close to the veterans as the race start approaches.  You are surrounded by the best team on the planet....leverage that experience.

  • ^^^ yup yup yup ^^^
  • Most important workouts are long bike and long run at this point.  The rest are secondary.
  • Such good feedback!  We all learn from each other.
It’s comforting to read this because I’m suppose to be on track for IMBoulder but have had some time challenges come up. It’s so easy to doubt yourself as IM approaches. Coach P would probably also say bike volume is key.
  • Thank you to everyone for the words of wisdom
