Swim Camp 2018 - Welcome!

Hey Team!  I'm already missing the Outseason Training Forum posts - so why not have a Swim Camp Thread to get us through the next two weeks right?

I just got back in the water this morning after not swimming a lap since March 2015.  Full disclosure, swimming is my strength in that I can usually come out fop ish with medium effort.  So, I have swam in the last three years......just only at races.  They weren't pretty, but I did it. So this morning, was a 400 swim/pull/swim and then ? x 50s of drill out/swim back.  over.  and over.  and over.  Don't even know how long I swam 50-55 min?  My stopping time is 0600 in order to get home in time for hubs to get to work - so I swam until 0600.  And it felt better than I thought it would.  My competitive side was happy the pool clock was broken :)

And we got 14" of snow from Sat to Sunday - so the drive to the pool was interesting, and the drive home was a parking lot.  Thanks to my husband who held down the fort until I could get back home to take over Mom duties - I don't think he was too mad that he got to call in a little late to work :)

  • @Leslie Sedlak

Was all set to get back in the water after 6 mos and we were hit with a wicked ice storm.  Schools closed, power outages, poles bent in half, 60 km winds.  I went to Option B, I did my Saturday morning ride on my trainer while watching Boston Marathon.

Swimming is a big strength sport for me, so I focus on bike and run in the OS.  Probably try again tomorrow as I only have a short run of 30 min which will be inside as well.

just have to find my swim bag from last August!
  • @Cheryl Turpin My family lives in MI and said the entire state was covered in Ice!  I was actually surprised my pool was optn - good call on your Option B.  I'm the same as you with focus on the bike and run in the OS - it feels great to be in the water and welcome the break from riding.

I feel like I spent half of Sunday getting my swim stuff together - I almost forgot a towel!!!

I did a nice easy 30' run this morning with some mobility exercises for 30 in the sauna while I waited for the kids to get up.
  • Heading to the pool now. Overslept this morning and have been checking the clock all day. It will feel good to get back in the water
  • This is my first time experiencing "swim camp" after coming off from a long stretch of run focused training. The logical part of my brain knows that these two weeks are great for many reasons but the crazy athlete side of my brain is questioning this entire camp. I agree the swims feel great. Enjoy these weeks
  • First swim since last September!  It was really good although the first couple lengths I always feel like a manatee!  Always feels like I am getting into my favourite PJs when I get in the water to swim!
  • Back at the pool today for Swim #2. The 10x 75s made the time fly. Best pool workout I've had in a long time
  • Great thread @Leslie Sedlak!  I'm hoping to finally get regular swim workouts going ... need the mojo from this
  • Off to the pool for swim #3 this week.  @Katherine Chabot-Boucher I hear ya!  This is really the first time in 10 years that I have hopped in the pool and not really had a 'plan'.  Been doing a 400 swim/pull wu and then just do drill out and swim back, until I hit 6:00.  I have to admit that I'm really enjoying the reduced structure after hitting out season without a hitch.  I found myself really looking forward to these two weeks, ending in a 13.1 run race with some rest on my legs, but still keeping up with my aerobic capacity.  And I started my first run 'streak', so at least running a mile, even on non run days.

Bonus is there is a coffee shop directly on my way home, AND kid 'stuff' is usually sorted by the time I get home (I usually bring hubs a coffee to buffer the fact that he has the kids while getting ready for work).
  • Watched the swim videos and read some of the guide. Today's swim felt really good.
swam more and faster today than earlier in the week.
hope you all had a good swim too
  • Update: swam two days in a row ... woo hoo!!!  Both sessions were 1600 yards.  Plenty of distance for now, just working on form and rotation.  Not even wearing a watch or tracking time at this point
  • Swimming just makes me hungry all day!! I love to swim but dear lord watch out here comes hangry LOL!
  • I agree no watch, no worry about speed...it’s all about stroke fundamentals for these 2 weeks.....after 6 months of no swimming, I am happy to report that I remember how to swim and it’s still my favourite place to be!
  • I went back to the swim this week. I can admit my shoulders are so weak now. This year I am working on a sub 28' 2K project, yesterday was my first assessment and my 2000M time was 28:50. Last year my best was 28:10, so I kind lost some swim fitness this winter.

so this week: 3 swims, total of 6850M.

For me, the swim also makes me hungry all day, no idea why!
  • I'm envious of all you FOP swimmers!!

As for that 'hangry' post swim ... lots of theories on body temp being cooler than cycling and running causing the body  to burn more  to stay warm. That theory doesn't hold up if swimming indoors. . When cycling you can eat. Running suppresses appetite because of hormones. But when swimming you're not really eating so when the session is over hunger hits hard.

From what I've seen anecdotally with  clients is that you need to have a small amount of calories before swim and if it's an intense long swim a bottle on deck with some calories and electrolytes to keep you hydrated. Post swim... don't wait, have a bar or something right out of the shower.
  • @Sheila Leard

i have a small snack about about an hour before my swim of good fat and some carbs but not a huge one.  I find when I am done with the swim, I’m not hangry...but I am thirsty and I have a protein shake
  • 1600 yards at lunch time ... five days in a row
  • 2km Swim which was preceded by 60 min of strength work with heavy emphasis on glut and core.....now I’m going to have linch
  • Great job everyone - Yay for week 2!  I have my first official 13.1 race on Sat, and Coach P tried to get me to switch over to the last week of the Half Marathon plan....but I offered a swim camp alternative because I'm enjoying it so much!  Maybe it's because I still can't ride outside, because we still have snow and the roads are crap - I'm pretty sure my 5 year old could fit in some of the pot holes!

Anyway, just over 2K today - did my last 6 x 100s very respectably - looking forward to starting 6 weeks of HIM training next week, so soaking in EVERY low key minute of swim camp.  Enjoy!
  • I am on my second week of swim camp and the weather outside is perfect for spring biking and I am having a very hard time not jumping on my bike.  I too will be jumping on my HIM plan next week. This will be my first HIM in June I hope 7 weeks is enough training time. Just keep swimming just keep swimming......
  • Six straight days.  Lifeguard now says "hi" to me.
  • So.....looking too far ahead to friday I know....but was excited for time trial until I realized I have a half marathon on Saturday.  Was just going to do quick run with spin ups, but maybe do a swim with an EZ 1K swim just to see time?  I'm so curious!!!  too much before race day? Or not a big deal because it's swimming?  anybody have two cents?
  • Leslie, I dont think the swim will impact your half marathon. But thats for
me, we are not all the same :)
  • Leslie if this half marathon is not your "A" race I wouldn't worry to much about the swim and do it. Actually you could just try it out so you would know how your body responds.  Good luck :)
  • Skipped today :(  Dog got me up at 3:00 and couldn't fall back asleep.  Tried until 5 (too late to go to pool) and did mobility for an hour before the kids got up.  I realized I ran twice on Wednesday - oops - so just doing some quick spin ups today in prep for first official timed half marathon tomorrow!

  • Good luck on you race tomorrow @Leslie Sedlak!  I hope the weather is fabulous
  • @Leslie Sedlak have a great race tomorrow. Hydrate today and rest up
  • @Cheryl Turpin @Katherine Chabot-Boucher @Mary Russo  The race went great!  A bit chilly - 40 degrees at the start, but sunny and very little wind.  I volunteer with Team RedWhiteBlue, and we were a sponsor of the race, so we were able to present the colors for the National Anthem - which was great.....but......usually they let us hop into our respective pace groups, and this race, we had to go all the way to the back of the corral.  So, the first two miles was A LOT of weaving between people.  BUT good news is, I only had on 9:00+ mile and I smoked my husband's half marathon time (which he did 12 years ago)  So this 41 year old mother of two, kicked his 29 year old single butt :)   I finished 1:50 and change I think - so I'm happy with that.  I was able to negative split for sure and push the last 5 K, and today I feel great!

The hubs only has one remaining record he holds in the house - his 10 mile run with he was young 20 something, and it was a race downhill......he averaged a 7:45 pace....not sure I can break that - but I'm going to try this fall.  I guess he does also hold the fastest half ironman bike time - but he always blows up on the run in order to bike his heart out...I don't call that a win - but I'll give it to him since I hold all of the rest :)

I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful day - our snow piles here in MN are finally GONE!!!!

On to Half Ironman Training tomorrow!

  • Congrats @Leslie! Sounds like the OS was great training for you. Way to go on the negative splits
you are going to have a great year!
  • @Leslie Sedlak That is a great time!  All your hard work paid off threefold and to have new PR house bragging rights is the best!

Kind of sad Swim is Done,  really enjoyed that two weeks.  I start 4 weeks of bike focus tomorrow and switch to IM 70.3 plan.

    Enjoy your victory
