Week 8

So far, so good.  It's great when my boss is on vacation all week. Not that he cares or isn't supportive of my race, but I feel less guilty.  It's a slow work week anyway.  I slipped away for a long "lunch" on Monday at the outdoor 50m pool for the first time this year.  I switched the Friday and Monday swim workouts because it made more sense to me to do the long sets in the 50m pool and save the shorter sets for the 25y pool.  I stretched the workout to a full 3900m.  The only downside is this pool is full of something nasty--when I come out, my hair is brittle and it takes two days of scrubbing to get the residue off my skin.

Tuesday, I really wanted to focus on bike work so I set up the Computrainer for the first time in months.  Yikes, I'd probably be in a better spot now if I did all the intervals inside.  The CT suffers no fools, and I'm a fool on the road.

The 45 min. run was fine this morning.   I'm dreading the long run tomorrow, though.  I'm skipping the VDOT test because I know exactly where my VDOT is, and I missed a 150' run at the LP camp, so I want to get one of those in this week.  The overnight low is supposed to be 77.  It's going to be brutal tomorrow morning.  Starting early doesn't help me because I hate the humidity more than the heat.

And one more gripe.  I'm sick of 4+ hour bikes rides.  I like them when I'm on a new road or somewhere interesting, but I'm sick of the W&OD trail on Saturday mornings.  But it's the only relatively straight shot out of town with few stops, and I promised my family I'd be off the bike by 10:30 every Saturday (except for the race rehearsals).  So I don't have time to drive anywhere to try anything new.  Once I get about 1:45 out of town, I can hit the country roads for a few minutes before turning around, so that adds some variety.  Oh well.  For the final race rehearsal, I'm taking a day off work and may try to find somewhere new.

  • ARGGHHHHH!  I feel better now.  I was having a tremendous run yesterday.  Had done 3x1 mile intervals and was cruising home effortlessly enjoying the beautiful summer morning until the area between my right calf and achilles tightened up.  I stopped to stretch, started up again and it didn't feel right.  I stretched and walked it home.

I stretched, rolled, iced, and elevated yesterday.  Feels much better today.  Gonna take a few days off of running.

To say I'm aggravated is an understatement, but what the heck.  Could be worse.  If I get lemons, than I'll try to make some kick ass lemonade.

Got a TTT tonight.  Looking forward to that.

  • I had a lousy swim today. After watching the US-Algeria soccer game, I headed to the outdoor 25m pool. The water was too hot, and my feet and calves started cramping about 2500m into my swim. I cut it a bit short and called it a day. These cramps come on when I push off the wall, so I don't get them in open water. Friday, I'll go back to the 50m pool--half as many push offs from the wall . . .
  • I'm not getting enough sleep, and have gone full on Norton mode. All workouts beyond long run, long ride, and Sunday ride are optional / bonus. It's the only thing keeping me sane this last two weeks...
  • Mike I am with you. This week has been a semi-disaster for me. Work has picked up and I had to scrap 3 of the last workouts this week, feeling fat and lazy.
Hoping this weekend to have good training days. Last 2 weeks before taper I have to trust the training hours I have spent. I think I would only do more damage by trying to adjust stuff.
  • I did the vdot test at the wall street race in the financial district today - it was 90 degrees - and i lost a vdot point - not my best effort i'm ignoring it. oh yeah i hammed yesterday's bike workout oops.
  • oh yeah 30 days — yikes!!!
  • Atif, neither of us are fat or lazy. Just dealing with the hand that we are dealt. It's not going to amount to a hill of beans on race day. As Lance always said,I'd rather be 5% undertrained on race day than 1% overtrained. Get the rest you need, and you'll do fine.

  • Good week for me,

I had to move the long run to Sunday but hitting long runs and rides and ftp is creeping up toward 300 so very cool.  No injuries and feel pretty good.  On duty at the firehouse so back on the rat wheel today and hopefully get in some sleep intervals.

  • Just FYI. BIke Course has changed. They are taking out the Haselton loop due to bridge construction. There is a a six mile out and back loop now pas the town of Jay BEFORE you start that big climb to Haselton.
  • i did that out and back last week - it seems flatter than Haselton - I could be completely wrong on this of course.
  • Mike...with you on that one...school year just ended and I am absolutely whooped!
  • @Cary, totally agree, much flatter, and since it's before the turn onto 86, you're less whooped.

Had a really good ride today. Just sub 80 miles in 4:16. Felt very strong for the FTP parts, basically good for the 85% section, and was piecing it together for the end. One of the better long rides I have done. I finally made a bit of progress on the neck/shoulder pain I've been having, too. Figured out how to stretch it and make a few postural changes to keep it somewhat at bay (not perfect, much much better).

Way to keep on keeping on, all!
  • I have to admit that my ride was less than stellar today at about an hour in I was just done. I'm guess just wiped from 3 long weekends of travel with training/events in a row (a century, a HIM & a RR). I actually got off the bike and sat on someone's lawn for 5 minutes at about two hours in to the ride. My mental mojo was low, I had to tell myself that I'm fortunate to even be able to participate in training and events like an ironman. I snapped out of it and did another 2:45 on a previously unexplored route and made it back to my car in around 4:40. Got back to the house opened a beer and cleaned the bike - that always makes me happy image. I had to force myself to eat dinner.

I'm ready for tomorrow though - 2 hours @ Z3 and a 30 minute brick run - that's practically a day off at this point, right? image
  • Werd! I totally feel the same way. Nothing like "only" an easy 2.5 hour workout. We're all frickin' nuts...

  • My "easy" 3.5 hr brick today wasn't all that easy. I'm kinda looking forward to the taper.
  • I think I need a day off. I felt lousy this morning, and rode for 1.5 hours and did a real slow 30' run. It was probably too much to get any rest and not enough to get any training effect. I should have just skipped it.
  • I slept in and did the workout at noon - bike was ok, i took a little fall, a few scrapes - run was hard as it was hot. I'm definitely feeling the fatigue.
  • I had a good weekend of riding. At least something is going good for me since there hasn't been much running and swimming. Did 100 miles in 4:35:04 on Sat. and finished with an IF of .809.  Today's ride felt surprisingly good and couldn't' wrap my head around just going a solid 2.5 hrs. at .85 so I did as 12X10' (1') and got in a solid 55 miles in a little under 2.5hrs.

I might end up with a solid bike at least.  But the run will be a huge ????

  • Trent - You got some time to heal - you are going to kill it.
  • Well, I wrapped this week up on a good note.  Had a mild setback with a calf strain early in the week and an attempt to run again on Friday was cut short as it still didn't feel good.  I already ranted in another thread, so I'll leave it there.

Rode 100 miles yesterday and did 57 today.  Today was tough, but I got it done.  Wrapped it up w/ a 25 min ocean swim in my wetsuit.  First open water swim this year.  Had to cut it short as I was getting a bit seasick with the waves.  Oh well, at least I got some time in the OW in the wetsuit.

  • So the end to horrible week, was a decent training weekend. I had to skip a lot of the stuff during the week because of work. Saturday, slept in a bit just to catch up on the hours. Went out for 2.5 hr ride fast ride followed by a 20min run, wanted to just take it easy. Decided to do the long bike ride on sunday, did a 95 mi in slightly more than 5hr.
    Looking forward to the RR
  • Tough bike weekend - lots of humidity & sweat. The hardest part wasn't the intervals or run brick on Sunday, it was keeping my sunglasses clear enough to see where I was riding! How are you guys going to treat the 6hr./112mi bike next weekend? Spend time in Z1-Z2 or just do the time/distance?
