Tracking app

Any suggestions for a tracking app for my wife to view my whereabouts while I am riding?  I have tried Life360 with marginal success - perhaps I'm riding in areas with limited cell service.  There could be a small dose of operator error, but thought I'd at least explore other options.  Thanks!

  • @Joel Kubala - I use the Road ID App. Your wife can see exactly where you are and if you crash/stop for more than 3 mins, it will send an alert to your specified contacts (unless you cancel it). It gives my wife piece of mind. Of course, it needs cell service/Wi-Fi and GPS to work.
  • iPhone?  Use Find My Phone app
  • iPhone and Find My Friends
  • I have a Quarq Qollector that I use whenever I ride alone or race.  My wife can see in real time where I am.  Sometimes she will meet me on the road, and bring extra drinks or take pictures.  I also carry my phone for emergencies but this way I know the battery won;t be dead when I need it.
  • If you're often riding in areas with no cell service, I don't think any smartphone app will do what you're looking for.  For that, you'd need something like a SPOT messenger or the Garmin InReach.  I used to do a lot of offroad adventure riding (motorcycle) and I'd be in remote areas with no cell service all day and wanted to be able to stay in contact with family and friends.  Both of those devices use satellites to send out tracking points periodically, rather than cell or wifi.  The Inreach has the advantage of being able to text over satellite.  Speaking from firsthand experience, do NOT underestimate the value of 2-way communication during an emergency.

If you're just doing local rides and want the wife/family to be able to track your whereabouts, the Find my iPhone app works well.  My Garmin Edge 1030 also has a feature where it will send out a message to an emergency contact if it senses a crash (needs to be paired to a smartphone).  I'm sure there are many other apps that do the same thing but again, all of these rely on cell service.
  • Great suggestions - appreciate everyone taking the time post!
    Happy (and safe) training!
