Bob Irwin Official Coach Thread - comeback from hip surgery
Hi Coach P. I had hip replacement surgery almost two years ago, and my recovery has been slow. I'm just back to the point where I can walk 3-4 miles comfortably. I'd like to see if I can get back to racing, but I'm not sure where to start - I'm pretty out of shape. I've done 15 half and 2 full IM's, so I'm hoping that my fitness will come back pretty quick. My target race would be St. George 70.3. I won't be able to run - but my surgeon said it would be fine to walk the run portion. I guess I'd want to start with the outseason, and follow it up with some portion of the bike focused half plan. I have no idea when to start what considering I've been off for so long, and can't run. Thanks for the help.

Hi there. I don’t mean to be nosy but I had a Total hip replacement 4 years ago and have done 5 70.3s since then yet it took me a year and a half to get some semblance of running back. I run using the Galloway method. I have one more 70.3 in August and then a Full Marathon in October.....PM me if you have questions etc

Hope it was okay to hack the thread.....there aren’t many hip replacement athletes on the thread. If I can be of any help, please let me know.....I ran 16 kms on the treadmill yesterday, 4 yrs post hip replacement...no pain etc
i would be happy to share my fitness plan that got me back to racing and running in particular.
Happy to help. I will send you a note this weekend @Bob Irwin
Did you see the message I sent regarding my specific recovery methods after hip replacement?
