EN Full Bike or Run?

Coach P:

On the 27th I transition from HIM Bike focus to EN Full.  I don't recall having a bike v. run focus last year, so I'd like some input.  My HIM training has been intermediate bike focus.  My speed is only marginally better (1 to 1.5 mph), but my endurance is significantly improved.  The same is true for my run.  However, I've been training in 90 degree temperatures so I don't know that speed increases are all that realistic.  At this point I'm confident that I'll be able to average about 16 mph on the flat ride in IMFL.  I'll probably know more about the run after HIM August the end of September.  Right now, my VDOT is about 22, but I had a noticeable increase in pace yesterday when I ran in a light rain shower, thereby reducing the heat.  My weight is at appx 240 which is about 25 pounds less than this time last year.  I'm hopeful for 225 by November, but with the volume increase, the weight loss has slowed.

I give you all this information to ask the following question.  Should I transition to IMfull Run focus? or IMfull Bike focus? Or does it not matter, and I'm just overthinking everything?

Thanks for your help.

  • @david holmes -  congrats on the weight loss...that will make your run so much faster!!!!   I say that you go Bike Focused (yes, the focus plans are new for 2018) to continue your progression. Honestly stronger bike fitness means a better run split, and I'd rather have you running consistent / steady vs adding any extra intensity which you don't need.

    Onwards!!!!
