Shoes: self-made drain holes

I've been running in the lunaracer 2s and I love them. The only problem I'm having is when it's super hot (everyday in ms) they tend to hold a lit of sweat and the water that I like to pour on myself. Anyone ever tried drilling some drain holes in their shoes? I think the lr2s are just a thick foam, so I wouldn't think it would hurt to have holes in the soles. Any thoughts?

  • My only fear, and I'm sure you've thought about it, would be sand/gravel getting up into your shoe bed through the holes. To fix that, you make the holes small, but then they are easily clogged by...sand/gravel. Even if you're exclusively on roads, there's still a bunch of stuff that wants into your soles. How big would you drill the holes?
Are you wearing socks in them? Light socks might do better than heavy socks or no socks at wicking the loose water and moving it out.

It might also be something about the shoe itself. I do trail runs with lots of stream crossings in ASICS 2150 Trail's, and I can tell you that they don't hold much water at all. But then, being a trail shoe, they are designed to dry quickly.

I guess the best thing to do would be to sacrifice some recently "retired" shoes and DRILL BABY DRILL (sorry, I had to). Maybe try one size hole on the right, and another on the left. Run on some representative course, do some water dumps, and inspect 1/2 way, and then pics when you get home. Remember to put your hand inside at the end to feel for any new debris.

  •  Good points Mike.  I've run in Zoots in the past and not really had that much of an issue with stuff working its way into the shoe.  I've got some old Lunar Trainer's that have a similar sole to the lr2s.  I may drill in those first and see how it works out.  I'll let y'all know.
