Augusta Race Report

Coach P:

I posted my race report from Augusta in the race report forum.  I don't know If I was supposed to tell you this or if you would automatically see it.

Generally a happy report.

  • @David Holmes you should always bump me here, so thank you! Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed as a huge chunk of the team is now gearing up for Chattanooga.

Overall I’m very pleased with your race as well. Aside from that flat tire things are looking really good. You seem to always pick the hot races, so kudos to you for getting it done after a long year. I know you continue to focus on body composition, finding a way to crack the code is definitely room for three more free speed. Regardless you should be pretty pumped.

What are you thinking for next steps?

  • Getting ready for IMFL. Still trying to lose weight.
Trying to recover from Augusta and prepare for IMFL is a tough balance this morning

  • Just take it one day at a time it’s been a good fit is a useful step towards preparation for Florida because you learn a lot about where your fitness is right now as well as what changes or tweaks we need to make.

As long as you are making clean healthy food choices it’s OK to eat to recover. You can feel that extra training time this week while you were tired with swimming, even if that means using the pull buoy to make it a little bit easier.

Any other lessons learned from the race that you think you will apply to Florida?

  • Yeah I've got to get faster at changing a tire. Running seems to be coming around a bit. My last mile at Augusta was my fastest. I feel great about IMFL which frankly scares me. Right now I'm just ready to be done. At the same time I panic if I even miss 30 minutes of training.

Guess right now, I just need to keep on keeping on. I moved race camp week to next week due to family constraints this weekend. Also, my bike club is riding to the beach about 100 miles which fits the long ride period really well on Saturday. Then I can run down there.

Kind of need to dial in my nutrition I guess. I just really didn't want to eat solid food on the bike. Resulted to just gels. I didn't feel any real effects from it, but I figure on a marathon, I will wish I had eaten. I'm thinking about taking a PBJ instead of cliff or picky bars. They just seem too sweet when I'm eating them. I could have just been the heat I guess. I have very few issues with stomach irritation so I guess some good protein in a pbj might not be too bad.

I really think the holding back on the beginning of the run will be a big help in Fla.

Thanks for the help and encouragement.

  • @David Holmes - thanks for the additional details. One of the side effects of racing in high temperatures is general apathy for eating. I’m glad you were able to solve that with gels.

Generally speaking, the weather at Florida is pretty cool for most of the bike. The fact people are wearing our members and sometimes even fast so eating should not be a problem. I personally prefer the old power bars as they are durable and quality food. And race day quality food.

I would recommend that no matter which nutrition option you choose for solid food in Florida, you carry one or two extra things of something else in case you’re one option isn’t what you want. Or at least put something different in special needs.
