Roger Breshears Official Coach Thread

edited October 9, 2018 5:50PM in Coaching Forum 🧢

Roger-

Here's your Season Roadmap, as promised. As a PlanEN athlete, you only get this resource completed once per season, so let’s get this right!

The intent of this plan is to give you a guide as to how you can use our training plans to achieve your goals. You have access to all EN Plans via the Final Surge platform (more plans are added all the time) as well as our resources and other relevant items. Our goal is to help you become the best Self Coached Athlete you can be.

Coach Notes

While your fitness is down, it sound like you’ve been active enough that “re-entry” into full triathlete mode shouldn’t be that painful!

I have you starting with Run Durability Program This Fall, but you can supplement with a bit more swimming if that works for you. Once you sync your workouts with Final Surge I will be able to see your basic pattern and recommend some adjustments for you. The goal here is to really build up some run consistency and lay the foundation for the 2019 season. There’s plenty of work ahead, I promise!!!

Once you are through the OutSeason Plan It’s on to Swim Camp to recover and then the Bike Focus plan to build up some ealry miles before you transition to the EN*Full plan .

Your Races

  • 9/8/19 Ironman Wisconsin

Season Outline

These are your recommended training plans, including the date you should start each one (sometimes you won’t complete a full plan but transition to another one).  You can change your plans on the Final Surge Platform at any time, and you can learn more about each plan on the Training Plan Central Page. If you only need to load certain weeks of a particular plan, here’s how you can do that.

Your Notes

We moved at the beginning of the summer so I decided to not race this year.  As a result, this has been a down year for me and my fitness isn't near what it was say a year ago.

I did many bike rides with a group that was training for a half ironman so I did many 50 mile rides over the course of June and most of July. I typically swim twice a week with a triathlon masters group, currently doing about 2000 yards per session. Over the last couple of months I have been running about three times a week, averaging 12 miles a week.

Part One: Your First Month on the Team

You have quite a few things to do when you start up. There are instructions on the top of the website, but you can review them under Resources / Trial Member Welcome.

Your First Season Inside Endurance Nation

Our top two goals are to get you training with our plans and learning how to race Endurance Nation style. Synchronizing you with the Final Surge Log will ensure you are doing the right work at the right time. With this momentum in place, our goal is to educate you (via the Racing Section) on what it means to put together the best possible race. While you don’t have access to all of our resources in the PlanEN level, you can still prepare for your best possible race!

Contact Points

As part of your journey to becoming a Self Coached Triathlete inside TeamEN, we are prepared to give you excellent support for your first 90 days. Our goal is to transition you from live, in-person support to using our digital resources and learning opportunities to help you continue your progress as you execute your Three Year Plan.

    Please change to Roger Breshears.

I’m working through the first week plan, syncing with FinalSurge. After I complete my testing this week I’ll start the Run Durability plan. Looks like you’re prescribing that I work through the three RD plans but should plan to start the Outseason (Bike) Plan on 1/7/19 even if I’m not done. Is that correct?

I am curious why you chose the bike focused Full Plan, bike vs run.

@Roger Breshears - great to hear from you. Yes to the RDP first as the build up (it’s a great long-term investment!).

We assign Bike Focused plans in Year One, Run Focused in Year Two and then pick strategically in Year Three. If you’d like we can re-evaluate as you progress through the Fall/Winter! 👍

@Roger Breshears - Great to talk today...I know you aren't staying "team" the whole season, but wanted to follow up with you.

    1. Role of Cadence as it relates to running speed is a great question. Here's a nice article to read on other options; note also the best way to improve cadence is to hold your fists closer to your biceps/shoulders....faster hands = faster feet!
    2. You'll want to improve your run consistency this Fall...so be sure to set a weekly "goal" in Strava (or wherever) and do your best to nail it.
    3. Don't forget the odd speed session...a TurkeyDay 5k or something similar...is the perfect dose of speed. Just be sure to warm up!

    Happy end of October,

    ~ Coach P

PS - Let's update your profile picture when you get the chance…it really helps the Team to "get to know you" a lot better.

You can do that by following this animated GIF (below)…good luck!

    @Roger Breshears

Welcome to your THIRD MONTH  inside Endurance Nation!

This month we focus on helping you become more independent as part of your growth as a Self-Coached Athlete.  Whether you are planning your season, preparing to race or transitioning to a new endurance challenge...Team Endurance Nation is ready to help!

If you haven’t done so already, please set up your Month Three Coach Call here.

    ** Training Focus **

We consider anytime in your season when you are more than 12 weeks away from your event to be a training focus. There are different phases of training (OutSeason®, General Prep, Sport Specific), but they are fall under the same umbrella.

Now that you are through your first two months of Endurance Nation, You have learned a few key “rules” of how we play the game, and you are ready to take charge of your experience.

    Training Lesson Recap:

    • No single workout is more important than your health, or your season goal.
    • Prioritize your “key” workouts each week, then fill the rest of your space.
    • We can always fix over rested. We can’t fix broken, exhausted or sick.
    • Have a specific goal for each training block - what is the desired end state?

    Taking Charge:

    • You should be comfortable moving your own workouts around at this point.
    • You can change plan ability levels as needed to keep yourself on track.
    • You can use the Test Week at any time to confirm a fitness change.
    • If you want to take a different path that we suggest...do it and keep us posted!

    ** Racing Focus **

Once you are within the final 12 week window to your event, it’s time to really focus. From key workouts to nutrition to logistics, there’s a great deal to cover. There’s a fine line between a great day and a day where you want a total do-over.

Key components of your final push should include:

    • Simulation Workouts to replicate the mental, physical and nutritional scenario you expect on race day.
    • A tried and true nutrition plan for your event; this is your last chance to lock it in!
    • Draft and review of a Race Plan to make sure you are 100% ready to take this on.
    • Optional rest as needed, and a defined taper in the last two to three weeks as necessary.
    • 13 Weeks out from your race you should be getting a race preparation email and an invitation to GroupMe - if you haven’t gotten that yet - let us know!

    ** Additional Support **

In addition to The Forums and other Team-related support, you still have the chance to connect with Coach Patrick across your first year. Right now it’s time for your three month call with Coach Patrick; and you can book it here.

Tip: Find all your other call windows across your first year, please visit the EN Staff page.

Be sure to check out our Three Year Plan in Resources / Wiki so you can see how we recommend improving from season to season.

    Coach Phone Consults

If you are looking for support above and beyond the traditional Endurance Nation experience, you can book a consult with Coach Patrick. These are billed at $100/hour and Can be on almost any training or racing topic. Please click here to learn more / get started.
