ON running shoes

I have been running in Hokas since 2014 and I think it is time to move on. I originally ran in the Bondis and then moved into every version of the Clifton. In the past 2 years I have started losing toenails. They just don’t feel “right “ anymore. They feel big, slow, and clunky. I realize that Hoka has re-introduced the Clifton 1, but I am ready to try something different. I purchased a pair of ON cloudX for work about 4 months ago and they have been very comfortable to just “walk around” in. So comfortable in fact that I did a 3 mile run in them and then the next day an 11 mile run. I ran 20 sec. per mile faster than I usually do. Other factors may be in play there, but bottom line, they FELT faster. I did notice a bit more fatigue by mile 9 in my lower legs. Anyway... I am considering trying another ON model designed for longer runs. Anyone wearing ONs? Thoughts?

  • Hi @Jennifer Datwyler . I switched to ONs this year from Hokas.

For me, the ON Cloudflow is a great shoe that can handle long runs, but also feels light enough for speed work. My wife recently switched to the Cloudflow (she has the CloudX for working out) and really likes them too.

I've tried the Cloud X and for me they didn't feel like they had enough cushion for running. I've also tried the Cloudflyer and they felt too heavy with too much stability built in.

I've been able to get 275-300 miles on a pair of Cloudflows.

  • Also @Jennifer Datwyler , I've noticed the area around the ankle of the shoe can be a little stiff for the first ~20ish miles. I find I need to wear socks during this period. After that, I am okay to run sockless in them.

  • I’ve used a few different models of ONs and I love them all. I don’t believe ON is making the CloudFlyers anymore (I really liked these). I am currently running in the Cloud and the CloudFlow and I really like both. The CloudFlow definitely has more cushioning, and the Cloud is lighter.

  • just bought the ON Flows yesterday... racing in Newtons... which is going south so to speak....

I like the Flows and will likely wear out my Newtons (distance S) after this race. they have the snap of the Newtons and are comfortable although the 6 mm drop is more than I usually like... I'm a forefoot runner so it might not make any difference anyway...

  • Like you I started wearing Cliftons in 2014 and like you I started losing toe nails when the 4s came out. One of the shoes I switched to was the ON CloudFlow and really liked it. I went with the Flow for its cushioning and light weight. Unfortunately, around 270 miles they started hurting my feet and I stopped wearing them at 300. I'm used to getting 350-400 miles out of shoes, and I plan to get another pair next year but now I'm in the Hoka Cavu, which (to me) is similar to the earlier Cliftons versions. I also picked up the Clifton 1.

  • I switched from mizuno's last year (got fed up with them constantly changing the same model) , I love all the ON's Ive tried, they took me a while to get used to them but now I use them for all running, Ive got the flyers as my most used & race shoes, ventures for off road & just started with the cloudace for RDP slow miles (quite heavy, unsure at the moment), Ive also got a pair of clouds for just dog walking & leisure.

  • Thank you everyone for the input. I have been running in the cloudflows for a week now. I really like the feel of them. They feel lighter and more springy than the Clifton’s for sure. My feet and lower leg do feel more fatigued, but I am hoping that will resolve with a bit more training. I saw my PT yesterday and he said my quads are “freakishly” tight. Working on mobility now!
