The importance of sighting

Ok, in my partial defence, this was only my 2nd OWS since 2008.

Ugh.  Hopefully 700 people to follow will help a bit next weekend...either that or I need to lobby for them to paint a black line on the bottom of the lake...

  • Actually, that doesn't look too bad! I've definitely done much worse.
  • My first thought was the same as Mike's, that looks pretty good to me.  Really cool regardless.  I need to spend the time to figure out how to use the firmware for my garmin so I can see how bad mine looks...

  • that's awesome sighting! I go in circles if I'm not paying attention!
  • You post in shame and find yourself a rockstar. It's amazing what 349 people on your left and 350 people on your right can help you do. image

    My thoughts exactly!

  • I would agree that is excellent. I have done and seen far worse. Just find the fastest set of feet you can draft off of comfortably-hard.

  • Looks great to me. Once I almost went head-on at the Worlds Toughest half as I drifted so far offline I was splitting the oncoming traffic.

  • I would pray to swim this straight. In Florida in May I swam from buoys to boats over and over again. If I had a 310XT I would see nothing but Z's.
  • Looks REALLY good! Do not despair AT ALL!
  • Other than the couple 90 degree turns on the top part it does not look to bad.  I'll have to remember to load my first open water swim in 3.5 years and see how I do.

The only other idea I can offer... Does the software provide a smothing function like WKO+?

You will be fine just make sure you pick a pair of feet to draft off that go straight.

    Enjoy GWN on Sunday,

  • I was pretty much off the grid last week on a vacation, then did the 1/2 IM on Sunday so haven't had a chance to reply thanking everyone for the kind words of encouragement - really appreciate it!

@CoachP - either that or 699 to my left and a well placed kayak paddle to the head.

@ChrisG - this was actually just in my swim cap - I do have the latest firmware, but after reading about the new OWS mode (seems iffy, and not as reliable as the good old fashioned method), I didn't even bother trying it.  Macgyvered a quick release system in the cap so it's secure and I don't have to worry about losing it.

Also, thanks to everyone for not pointing out that I'm a geek.
  • Geek!

Ya, looks good overall.  And how often are you sighting?  I am pretty straight swimmer and sight every 10-12+ strokes.  My wife is not so straight and sights every 5 - 6.  Tom Glynn swims with his head up all the time.    DOH!

One trick it to look for something on land that is fixed beyond the buoy instead of just a swaying buoy.

But not bad overall for a tri-geek.
