Early 2019 IMAZ Registration
Hi all,
Is this the first post for a late season 2019 race? Am I completely thinking way too far ahead?
I know IMAZ 2018 has not occurred yet, but who is in for IMAZ 2019? I understand from Brenda the team does not receive an early registration option (unless you volunteer this year) so let's get a list going and keep each other informed for early registration notices, etc. I have the race marked in my Ironman profile and will update this post with any emails I receive.

I will be volunteering and signing up.
Registered for #IMAZ 2019! It will be my first 140.6. I welcome any and all training advice for the course (and in general for new Full distance tris)! Who else will be making the trip to Tempe?
Hi @Matthew Goto , I'm in for IMAZ 2019. It'll be my first race at Arizona.
I've done Tempe 70.3 twice - I love the city and the course (for the most part) - Excited for November!
Hi @Matthew Goto welcome to TeamEN. There are a large number of members racing AZ this year. Many of them are very experienced on the course and can give you lots of advice. There are past race webinars and race reports and podcasts to check out in the Wiki and the Forums.
The 70.3 swim and run course are the same, but the bike course is completely different. Its 3 loops up the Beeline highway, not the in city course they use for the 70.3. Pretty flat, temps can be variable depending on the day.
As a local, I'll be riding the course as we get closer to race day. I'm not sure where you live, but if you're out this way, hit me up.
@Matthew Goto I'm registered for IMAZ as my first full has well. I'm also in January Outseason and so far, so good!
IMAZ is going to be epic this year!
Not included in this forum I know we also have @Peter Noyes @tim cronk @Nam Lam @Sid Wavrin .
Thanks for including me in this forum @Brian Hagan. So this is where the cool kids hang out eh?😂
There are a few EN’s who raced IMAZ and KQ’ed (Tim Cronk, Michael Collins) or KQ’ed later ( Matt Limbert), and bunch more who are between 10-11 hours. Their RR or recordings were funny and invaluable to me.
The swim course changed a tad last year so getting input from those who raced, attended (Tim Cronk) volunteered last year would be helpful as well.
Looking forward to the motivation from this group!
Nam
Saw @Gary Lewis ‘s post when I Scrolled up.
What do you think about the swim course change and T1 for 2018 @Gary Lewis ? Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Nam
@Nam Lam I did IM AZ last fall after doing it 5 x from 2008-14. The biggest issue with the swim for me was the "cold open". Meaning, no opportunity for in the water warm up. It's a 15-20 minute walk from transition to the line-up, and another 10-20' wait to get in the water depending on how close to the front you are. It's like Louisville, basically a continuous stream of athletes *individually* going into the water down a ramp. The water was a touch colder than usual (60.5F), so I wore a neoprene cap which @robin sarner kindly gifted to me (he had two, one of them too small for him). That was a life-saver.
There was a bit of an extra run from the water, but not really that much farther, considering where the exit ladder used to be, I'd say 0.25 mi farther. I ran a total of 0.5 miles thru T1, 8:30 compared to 5:00/08/45/45 in my previous races there. So it was more like IM Wisconsin in terms of time. Strategy: WALK until your head clears, then jog to wet suit strippers, then RUN after that. Change outside tent (they had chairs set up there).
Wow! Thanks @Al Truscott ! I love cold water, but that is really cold!
Thanks @Al Truscott . You forgot to mention “smile for a photo op as you casually put on your socks!” Or was that picture taken at T2?
Yeah, that was T2...
