Ironman Arizona 2019 Early Registration PSA
WTC sent out an email saying that next Wednesday the 21st, Tri-Club members will get an early registration opportunity for IM AZ, which opens for general on the 26th. This year's athletes, AWA athletes, and this year's volunteers will get a shot starting Nov 19...
If you want to go and are not in one of the above categories, go to Ironman.com and sign up as an Endurance Nation tri-club member to get your online link.

Thanks @Al Truscott I'm a fairly new member, thanks for the reminder to update my profile. Assuming I get in, this will be my "A" race
Good luck tomorrow @Al Truscott ! I look forward to tracking you throughout your day
Has anybody received the Tri-Club email from WTC yet today?
@Jeff Phillips I think they go out @ noon EST? I got my link as an athlete this year @ 10 AM MST.
BTW, I've registered 34x now, and this is the first time I remember paying sales tax! To say nothing of the $65 processing fee (on $750) - in the past those have been much more reasonable than nearly 10%! As well as a sneaky effort to get you to buy a backpack, right after the free tee-shirt check off. $60, and in the small print it says you'll still be receiving a bag (probably cheaper) on day of registration. Then an endless set of requests to buy running and riding IM AZ official gear, until you finally get to the opportunity to lay down $850 (probably more by now) for registration.
Thanks @Al Truscott . Email just came through, I'm all signed up! See you next November in Tempe.
@Al Truscott & @Jeff Phillips I am all signed up for 2019 as well.
@Al Truscott I'm happy to hear someone else was as alarmed as I was with the damn fees!! By the time I was done (Also had to renew USAT) I was north of $900. The thing that got me was you really had to pay attention at the very end and opt out of Active's program or they just charged your card for that. WTC is very good at what they do. Marketing machine! See you all at IMAZ.
@Sid Wavrin The USAT membership pissed me off more. I renewed mine right before signing up and it took me 20 minutes of trying to register to figure out that its more than 365 days to IMAZ2019. I had to purchase a 1 day pass also for another $15. :-(
I pushed from this year. what hotel did you stay at al? what's the vote for next year? I will book right away!
I didn’t get email to sign up.

Ugg, I really want to sign up. But i swore the last full was the last full for a while (did 2017 az). The damn itch keeps coming back! Guess I have a day to decide. At least the wife didn't even flinch when i mentioned it.
@scott dinhofer @Al Truscott how crowded is downtown Tempe during race week? (It'll be my first time there). I was considering one of many hotels within 3-4 blocks of the park to make it easier for my family to get around. Good idea or bad idea?
@Jeff Phillips Tempe is a college town, home of ASU. If you stay downtown you can walk around easily. Phoenix and the surrounding cities are all quick and fairly easily traveled. Tempe is 15 minutes from the airport, you can taxi, shuttle or uber. I live in Goodyear about 20-30 minutes away and there is pay and sometimes free parking right near transition, you just need to get there early as traffic backs up on race morning.
@Jeff Phillips To reiterate what @Gary Lewis is saying: The area between ASU and Tempe Beach Park, where transition and the start/finish are, is a modern, walkable commercial district about 1/2 x 1 mile. WIth lots of restaurants and shops, as well as a light rail station headed into Phoenix. Staying in one of the hotels between Rio Salado and University (N/S) and Ash/College (E/W) is a good bet for walkability. Outside of that core, you're better off being NORTH of the "Lake", along Scottsdale/Rural Road. Because downtown Tempe becomes gridlocked to cars on race weekend, as Rio Salado is closed and 1,000s of athletes and spectators are all trying to move around. So walking works, driving from the South or East doesn't very well.
Tempe lodging: Courtyard by Marriot; Residence Inn by Marriott; Temple Palms are the big choices in the Tempe downtown core. There's also a new Marriott on RIo Salado I'm not familiar with. Along Scottsdale/Rural are: Hampton Suites, Red Lion, Baymont, Best Western, ALoft.
@Al Truscott - pick the hotel so I can book with you! shoot me an EM when you decide!
looks like a great group! @Al Truscott @tim.burns mentioned Red Lion as well.
Oops. @tim cronk ^^^
8 hours ago Facebook said it was at tier 4 pricing with only 150 spots left.
@Gary Lewis - at least IM has a chance of selling one out in 48 hours.. this used to be closed out in minutes. I remember when IMLP sold out in 10 minutes of opening.. #sosad
Looks like a ton of hotels in the area. I may end up using Marriott points to stay at the residence inn. It’s still too early to reserve.
Reservations. Will try again this AM

@Al Truscott I had the same experience. Please let us know if you have success.
I always stay southeast of the venue. Tempe or Mesa. On apache/ Main Street. Away from the mess.
Easy in and out for checkin and race day. Come in from the south on ash street.
Can use train to get to and from the venue.
Many cheap motel options.
I decided to stop waiting, take a step up in $$, and go with Mission Palms just 2-3 blocks from the venue, walkable to everything, for once. Via Trivago, $250/night including taxes and all fees. I could go without a car, conceivably, taking metro from airport...I have until 11-15-19 to change my mind.

Would anyone be interested in something like this? It seems there is a few in the area pretty close to the event. My wife and I will be there. I will look further into this if there is any interest.
@Sid Wavrin I would be totally in for this. Would be great if we could pull in @Al Truscott
don't know much about booking through expedia, are we better off going through AirBnB or VRBO?
@scott dinhofer I also have never booked a place like this through expedia but in this case it looks they are just acting as an agent for Home Away which I think is VRBO. This particular one looks like it is around $200/night all in. I have not studied it too close to confirm that but I will if there is interest. You guys can let me know and I will take of it you think it's a good idea.
@Sid Wavrin @scott dinhofer I looked briefly at VRBO/AirBnB houses, none are close to the venue, and driving from the ASU area to Tempe Beach park is a nightmare during race weekend. But more important, my approach to this race is leading me to want my own place, not a shared house. Nothing against you guys, it's a mental/emotional energy thing when I'm going for my best possible performance.
