converting files

I could've sworn I asked this here before, but cannot seem to find a thread.

Next year, my company will be using an app called Castlight, to encourage activity (ex, walking), by giving insurance credits to those that are active.

Well, they ONLY use walking (and supposedly running, but haven't validated it personally) metrics and while my Garmin 920 tracks activity and should work for that purpose, I don't wear it all the time. FYI, they sync to Garmin Connect, which is where they'd get the activity files.

I've questioned them on why they don't use bike or even swim files as well. I've suggested using the average rpm/cadence multiplied by time to estimate "steps", or even strokes/min for swim, but I'm not anticipating them making a change anytime soon. I'm healthier than a large percentage of the population but they cannot see that because they only consider walking as activity. Stupid.

For those of you familiar with the files that garmin outputs (.fit and/or gpx format), is there a way to change a bike or swim file to show as a run? That way I could get my "steps" in when I ride or swim too!

  • I do not know the answer. But, I do know I use my vasa to record a "swim" and I do it as an "indoor bike" activity. when I go to TP AND Strava, I can edit the file to a "swim" and it converts to strokes. Perhaps it works the other way.. Suggest you give it a try and see what happens :-)

  • Scott,

I'm not sure this will solve your issue but check out the tools from DC Rainmaker, https://www.dcrainmaker.com/tools

  • @Scott Alexander Not sure if the fit file tools would do this, maybe the file combiner. Derrek's link has this one in there.

While I agree with you that other sports should be included by altering files that don't fall within your insurances active credits. At a minimum they may remove some or all of the credits you have collected or you may be nullifying your insurance by adding in activities outside of walking. I don't work in insurance just my 0.02.
