Supplement for Women's IM training

Went to the doc last week just to get the green light for IM training and had asked about what if any supplements would be necessary to support the higher training volume/workload.  He recommend regular multivitamin and also 1000 mg calcium with 500 mg Vit D.  I remember there are 2-3 different types of calcium- carbonate, caltrate etc but can't remember which is the optimum one to take.  I also take 400 mg Vit E after long rides/runs and 500 mg of Vit C.  My iron levels etc have been checked and are currently normal.  I eat fairly well- fruits, veggies and very little processed foods.  Is there anything else I should consider?  Don't advocate taking lots of supplements but fact of life that I simply can't get enough in through natural sources during training.

   Thanks folks!

  • I can't help but think that you have most of the bases covered there!
  • thanks for posting this, I almost forgot to take my vitamins tonight, I take a women's specific vitamin pack morning and night that had a multi-vitamin, multi mineral, calcium, digestive enzyme and superfood antioxident, but I know I don't get all the "good" i need from foods (need to eat more veggies). As for calcium, it's carbonate you want. Caltrate and Citracal are brands of calcium. I think you need the calcuim to absorb the Vit D.

Good that your iron is normal. Do you eat meat ot other things that containe iron. I would make sure to watch that intake as you increase your volume.
    Good luck with your training!!!

  • If you've been feeling particularly fatigued, think about adding some Vitamin B12. In my work-up for fatigue I was found to have a Vit D and Vit B12 deficiency (low blood levels of both). Apparently, I wear too much sunscreen and don't eat enough liver, clams, and rainbow trout. I take a multivitamin, 1000mg of Vit D (and still wear spf 70), 1200 mg of calcium carbonate (Tums), and get monthly Vit B12 shots. After 6 weeks of that regimen, I am feeling better.
  • I really need to get to the store and buy a bottle of Multi Vitamins! Thanks for the reminder, I've been slacking.
