Coach Rich Makes Slowtwitch

Forgive me if this is posted elsewhere.  The EN way is a topic of discussion on Slowtwitch.  I suspect it's not the first time!!!

  • Priceless endorsements!
  • I couldn't help myself - I responded: (First part is quoting "showpony" to whom I was replying)

...does EN coach any really fast athletes? I mean pros or AGers at the very very pointy end of the field (males going <9:00-9:15 sorta fast, or females under <10:30)? I notice they advertise on their site "5 sub 10 performances"...is this a really old data point from like 1998, or for one recent race, or for the whole of last year? <br />

The data on that page are team member performances from 2009; there are links to ALL US/Canada IMs last year with splits and results from all team members who raced. Rich and Patrick have nothing to hide, no need to hype.

The beat goes on this year; I'm not fast, cause I'm old, but as an ENer over the past year, I've now won my AG three straight times (CDA twice, AZ once), setting a course record each time. The specifics of their race execution strategy can apply to a 7:30 bike split, or a 4:30 bike split. The stuff works, if you bother to train as they recommend, and then execute according to plan.

  • All, thanks for contributing to that thread...keep it going if you like .

I may drop in there and add a comment or two, especially the "does EN coach any fast people" bit. Only on ST can someone say "anyone fast, like 9-9:15 finishers? " Classic.

  • A successful race = a good run. There is no such thing as a good bike followed by bad run, period.

That could be a t-shirt. It is full of awesome.

  • A link to one of the articles was also on Houston Racing's site this morning. I posted a bit about the training and John's performance at CDA last year. Encouraged people to check it out.

  • I'll clean this thought up before I post to ST , but PnI don't get a woody for fast people, like other coaches do. I don't really care if you're fast or not. I want to know:

    • Are you going to train the way we say?
    • Are you going to race our way?

If yes, then you will get faster. Whether you start that process as a 14hr or 10hr Ironman...I don't really care. I'm not going to kiss your ass, or treat you special, because you're fast. Guess what? I'm fast too. So is Patrick, Matt, and any number of people in here. There are lots of fast people in the world, get over yourself.

But I'll tell that fast guy to give just as much credence to the advice of Nemo, or Linda, or many others as they would to the "cool fast people." If he has a problem with that...there's the door...

I'm a coach. I coach people. You come to me, I coach you. I could care less how fast you are or are not. What I do care about is will you do what I tell you, tell me when it's not working and we need to change it, and are you going to race the way I teach you. Period.

  • Yeah. Might definitely want to clean that up before you post... or not, if you want to watch fun ensue after THAT thought. image

Yeah. Might definitely want to clean that up before you post... or not, if you want to watch fun ensue after THAT thought.

    Thanks, Counselor .

I'll just stay away from that topic all together.

  • I responded on ST before seeing this but I think my point on ST is still in line wiht Rich's thoughts which is yes I went fast and used EN, but there are many many more people in EN and the IM world that are going for PRs then 9 hours.
  • Rich:

I knew you couldn't stay away. Well said, though.
