Pool Running Question

If you have done shallow water pool running (where you are touching the bottom) have you worn regular running shoes or some of those shoes made for this type of activity?  I'm going to add this in to my rehab program next week.

  • Most of the recommendations are to run in the deep water and not shallow. Although the gravity is lessened, there is still impact. That being said, I have done some in the pool with water shoes I got very cheap from Nike. ( I did have to swear tot he lifeguard that I had never worn them outside...)
  • I don't have access to a pool deep enough for deep water running. :-(

  • get one of the speedo floaty 'sumo' belts, it'll float your body up to waist deep - making any pool deep enough.

When I had to do my stint with pool running, if I went barefoot and ran my feet on the bottom, they got beat up because the bottom of the pool isn't as smooth as one might imagine.
  • @Scott: I'm concerned I'll topple over if my upper body isn't in the water. Ya know. . . weebles wobble. . . .Is that valid?

  • Most people's lower bodies are heavier than the uppers. I know mine are.

I don't have the weight of other 'appendages', if that's what you're worried about, so I can't speak to that.

Paging Nemo, I think she was our aqua-jogging guru.

Um. . .you have "lower bodies?"  Snicker, snicker.

A friend is bringing his water running belt for me this weekend.  I'll give it a shot and check in.

  • @Penny, there might be a rehab place near you that has a pool for therapy that qualifies, some have short term memberships. Get me your addy I'll research!!!

  • Penny- I ran in the deep end with a water belt and for my injuries was told absolutely NOT to push off the bottom. So I don't have experience running off the bottom of the pool. But I will say that I was able to run pretty far into the "shallow" end with the aqua jogger belt. However, I'm pretty short, so that probably has something to do with it! I don't think you want to be floating with your upper body out of the water- you want your shoulders & head out, but that's about it.

There's gotta be something close to you that you can use!
  • You can do a lot of work with one leg on a step (good one) and the bad one doing the work under the water but 4" off the ground...just did that tonight in the lake. image
  • The lady who coaches my Masters swim group has a "teaching pool" at home with a deep end. I'm taking a couple of lessons from her. I've emailed asking if I can come use her pool to jog sometime. :-)
