Patrick's R2R2R Run Plan- 2019
Well tomorrow is go time!! I woke up today 3:00 AM and thought to myself, "If I had to do it now, I'd be ready." jetlag was a big concern of mine as I was coming from Amsterdam and will only be in AZ for 3 days before I run. I haven't been back to the US in a few years so I don't remember how well my body adjusts to jetlag. And to be honest sitting here writing this I am still not sure.
Plan is to start 4:30-ish tomorrow. I am staying in Flagstaff which is 80 miles from Bright Angel Trail. So if I am up at 3:00 and out of the house quickly, I will be close to 4:30 start.
I have planned a bit, but I am NOT an over planner. I always feel that if I've got the fitness and my nutrition then everything else will fall into place. Nothing will be perfect, but even if every mile was planned it wouldn't be perfect either. I know that I am starting at BA then up NK and will take the same return route. If it's the right timing and I am in a place where I can get a lemonade or whatever, I will. If not, I'll keep going and enjoy mother earth.
As for nutrition I will take:
- 4x 500ml soft flasks with tailwind (caffeine) (800 calories)
- 4x tailwind refills (800 calories)
- Bean burrito (400 Calories)
- 2x uncrustables (640 calories)
- Salty chips
- Snickers bar (215 calories)
- Assorted mix of bars (I'll have to see what REI has in stock)
As for goals, well it's simple... I want to cry! I say this, because if I do, it means that I am completely overwhelmed with the entire experience. I would have had fun, I would have taken my time, I would have been strong, I would have gone deep into my soul, etc. I would have done done all of it!!
That's all I got... next post will be a ton Pics of the canyon!

Good luck and I hope you have a lifetime memorable experience! And watch out snakes.
When planning clothes, food, lights, etc consider you maybe out there 4-6hrs longer than planned. Batteries, charger, blister kit, meds, water filter, etc ? Do not pass a water station without topping off unless you are absolutely sure 100% where your next water source is. Weather looks perfect, low 30’s start, 65 high on the rim, shouldn’t get warmer than 85 at the bottom late in the day, will cool quickly when that sun sets, almost zero % chance precipitation, and pretty light winds. Enjoy the day, can’t wait to hear the story.
Well how did it go?
