Seminar: Integrating Non-Standard Elements into Plans
Last night (April 25, 2019), about ten of us participated in a roundtable seminar discussing "Integrating Non-Standard Elements Into EN Long-Course Training Plans." We tried to limit our focus to the last 3 months before an A-race such as a 70.3 or Ironman, as well as the official OutSeason.
The session was (hopefully) recorded, and will be posted shortly (@Coach Patrick I am assuming you or someone else from EN management is on this?)
Participants included (forgive me if I forget anyone): @Jeff Phillips @Andrew Lustigman @Derrek Sanks @Tim Sullivan @Sheila Leard @Paul Hough @Brian Hagan @Sid Wavrin @tim cronk @Tony Ledden.
Folks shared what they have done in addition to or in place of the training plans as written:
• More frequent running (durability focus)
• Zwift races as bike workouts
• High Volume Bike pops, 12 weeks before, and as part of the race rehearsal weekends - longer rides than the plans
• Recovery strategies including walking and naps, as well as judiciously placed days off or lower intensity days
• Strength training
• Incorporating shorter races (Sprint, Olympic) into the plans
• Flexibility such as Yoga, Pilates
• Modifications necessitated by physical changes such as injury or age
• Mountain Biking
• Multi-Day Bike touring
• Bike commuting
• Half marathon(s) replacing long runs
Tune into the video to hear about all these in detail: Watch It Here

Thank you @Al Truscott for taking the lead.
One of my biggest take aways from the seminar is that it's OK to race frequently at the shorter distances while training for IM. Racing breeds racing. It also keeps the fun in the sport.
One of the other things I do to "fit it in" are to bike part way home after visiting family in Panama City, FL or Valdosta, GA. That allows my family to stay longer and turns some of the travel time into a bike workout. E.g., we had Easter dinner with family on Saturday evening and I left for home Easter morning at 11am. 105 miles south, my wife got to the pick-up point just 5 mins after me.
Has the recording been posted?
