Bone Bruise Injury Experience

This past Sat I got a little impatient and took a tight/crowded turn too fast. Bunny hopped the ditch to avoid going over the handlebars and landed in tall grass, on my left side still on my bike. Finished 94 miles after the wreck, took about 5 miles to loosen my injured lower leg up. From what I can tell, I have a quarter-size bruise right on the outside of my left Fibula, at the top where the bone kinda sticks out.

It's just swollen, but has went down in size, I have full rang of motion just tight with all the swelling. Still hobbling when I walk, hurts to go up on my toe. No Tibia or knee pain. Ankle is all good with range of motion and such, gets a little swollen if walking around store or the like.

I have been elevating, icing, and using a low setting with air relax.

So has anyone has a similar type of lower leg bone bruise?

  • I have no idea, but there are medical doctors in the Haus that should be able to help Josh?

  • I think most of the team would tell you to amputate it @Josh Church So I am glad I got here first. No running for a few days, only after walking has minimal to no pain. You can swim away, and bike bike bike. Whenever possible, ice and elevate it.

Also, set a date whereby if symptoms haven't abated, you will go to the doctor / get an Xray to see if there's anything worse going on...I say by Monday 7/22. Do it now otherwise you'll get all wishy washy as time goes on.

    Please keep us posted!

  • Sorry to hear about the crash and injury @Josh Church !! I think you definitely need to amputate your leg. ;)

I think Coach gave great advice. Rest it and you should be back to full action before too long. But also get it checked out if it doesn’t get better.

  • Thanks guys, Will continue and get it checked next week if I still can’t walk normal. Pretty slow improvements 5 days post wreck, I wanna start running ASAP to get those awesome split runs started for IMCHOO. Staying positive and swimming more.

  • How are you doing, @Josh Church? Any progress?

  • Thanks for checking up on me @Janyne Kizer @Coach Patrick

walking better, swelling all gone. Still have a pretty harsh ache in my fibula at random times.

Cant see myself running this week at all. That will be at least 2 weeks before I can start building for IMCHOO again.

Heading to PT tomorrow just to make sure nothing more extensive needs to be done. I honestly think the bone is just going to take awhile to heal

  • Lets get to whats important.  Bike OK?

  • haha! I've actually taken my bike directly to the shop for a check-up and taken a wait and see approach to myself. 😲

  • @Brian Terwilliger

yea bikes good, it was a cycling race so not my TT bike thankfully.

PT appointment got pushed to Friday 👎 but it felt great most of the day today. I’ve got hopes for a couple easy jogs next week 🤞

also I am now following the injury modified plan I found in the Wiki and seriously thinking about deep water running tomorrow after my swim.

@Josh Church I had a micro trabecular fracture of my medial femoral condyle in 2016. Basically, I had a bruised bone on the inside of my left knee. I am not sure if you really have a bruised bone, because it took an MRI to diagnose. It took about three to four months for me to run pain free, so I basically took the summer off of running. Since you are about 15 years younger than me, it will hopefully heal quicker for you.

  • @Josh Church I'd probably crash and die if I tried actual cycle racing like crits and stuff. I go fast in a straight line. And thats about it. My actual bike handling skills are totally lacking. I would like to find some time trials around here though sometime just for fun.
