Help me with a 920XT replacement question

My 920XT is reading 22,400 ft of elevation. It's been replaced once before but is now out of warranty. Garmin has given me three options:

  1. replace with 920XT at $99
  2. replace with 735 at $99
  3. replace with 745 at a 20 % discount which would be $480

Number 2 seems to make the most sense. Any strong feelings about the 745 which seems pricey and not as good of a deal. I don't really think the added features are worth that kind of money.

thanks

  • This is a pretty common error and it can often be fixed by washing the watch with soap and water. Pay particular attention to the ports for the altimeter.

As for a replacement, I've done very well on the second had market for Garmin products. I got a Fenix 3HR for $250 and it's every bit as capable as the 745, just older and obviously not under warranty. Generally when the new models come out there will be a glut of people selling watches that are only 1-2 generations old.

  • The 735 for $99 seems like a pretty good deal. I think the 935 is an awesome watch, but that'll run you ~$400... and I'd just buy a 935 before paying up for the 745.

The only things the 735 is is really lacking is Wi-Fi direct uploading and connecting to bluetooth sensors (like Powermeters and trainers and some HRMs). If all of the things you will connect to are ANT+ this shouldn't matter. And it will still connect to your phone with Bluetooth, so the direct Wi-Fi uploads probably not that big of a deal. And it "only" has a 14 hour battery life, which should be totally fine for you for IM, but if you're planning to use it for ultra's, might just want to pay up for a 935 or a Fenix 5 instead. But if you're going to do that, then buy the 735 anyways for $99 and resell it on eBay for ~$200...

  • I’m sorry that should be 935 for $99 and 945 for $480

  • @Robert Sabo The 935 for $99 is a NO BRAINER! Buy that and don't even think about it again. The 935 is a Fantastic watch! I've had literally had every version of Garmin triathlon watch (405, 310, 910, 920, 935, Fenix5) as I like toys and generally just upgrade when the new version comes out. I don't feel any need to upgrade my 935 to a 945 (I don't need music, maps, or payments on my triathlon watch).

  • @Clark Mitchell thanks. I have usually just given it a quick rinse. The official recommendation is warm soapy water once a week. I have to be more diligent.
