Great article, thanks @matt limbert !! It sounds like the outbound light is something to check out. I’m surprised none of them have longer battery life. But I realize all the times were at highest power and I know lights last a lot longer at low or medium power. I’m thinking about trying to everest on road bike in January, so I’m hoping to get an awesome new headlight or two with November sales. I guess I can extend battery life by turning to low power when climbing (and I’m surprised to learn that some of them do that automatically) and Maybe attach a usb charging stick for a while to recharge while i ride.
Does anyone have experience using one of these lights while it is plugged in to recharge? I’m guessing may do not have that feature. (I tested this with Garmin edge and it worked)
i guess an alternative is to have two lights and use one while the other is charging. Time to starts saving $$. :)
Seconding Varia Radar for the rear (and I have used my 2016 version while charging).
For the front, I've used a Light & Motion Urban 500 when I wanted more visibility. It straps nicely underneath an aerobar and goes on and off in seconds. It does not work while charging, though.
I'm not sure about the specs on this light other than it supposedly runs for 2 hours at 1300 lumens, and it is only $97 with a cyberdeal19 discount code from REIoutlet. Supposedly 5 hours at 500 lumens.
I'm no longer planning to everest outside in january. I tried a virtual everest starting at 11:11 pm. I screwed up my nutrition and that combined with the sleep deprivation resulted in an awful experience. I passed out twice while vomiting in a bucket and had to stop (hyponatremia and/or too many gels with not enough solid food, I think). As a result, I now have no desire to do an event that goes all night.

If you are looking for a rear light, I'd highly recommend a Garmin Varia Bike Radar system. I saw a review over at DC Rainmaker and I love it.

@Larry Peters that sounds like good deal. And a awful experience. That does not motivate me to even try...
