You looked at the Halligan's coasting time at 4.4% and said, "I'll take that. Not too bad" (or something along those lines). Could you expand that discussion a bit?
One of my struggles with the hilly riding around here is keeping my coasting time down. It's normal for me to do a long ride with 8 to 10% coasting time. I know that whacks out my VI, but I usually only coast when I'm traveling around 30 mph or more or when I'm taking nutrition on a down hill. I figure the rest at a higher speed is a good thing & seems like more of a function of course selection than problems with consistency. Am I thinking correctly or do I need further enlightenment?
Thanks. I have a race rehearsal in a week. Maybe I should just send that file along.
From what I have read when you hit 30-32-34MPH you should be soft peadling or coasting. Now what is a good percentage 8-10% if you are on a lot of steep hilly terrain and hitting 30+MPH I guess it is what it is.
I think the comment from Patrick, and he can correct me if I am wrong, on the "I'll take that. Not too bad" is in relation to this being a race rehersal. We are suppose to go out and find a flatter course so coasting would be a negative thing. Just remember that if you are doing a 5:30 bike split 8% coasting is almost 27' and 10% would be 33'. I don't think (again I could be corrected here) on most IM courses especially those in North America you would want to be coasting for 33'.
All this is arm chair analysis as I will ride my first RR with power this Saturday and IMC in August so take it for what it's worth.

Dan,
Not a WSM but here's my take...
