Hip Attachments/Shorts for Recovery Boot Systems

Apologies in advance if this has been addressed already. I tried searching through the forums, but was unable to locate an answer...

I am ready to pull the trigger on the purchase of some recovery boots (either Air Relax or Normatec). Since I also tend to have issues with tight, achy hips, I am wondering if anyone has had experience with the hip attachments for either of these systems. If you have, can you share whether you felt it was worth the additional cost for that, or do the boots alone provide enough benefit?

Just curious what the experiences have been with it.

Thank you for your insights!

  • @Wendy Kelly I have the Normatec with the hip attachment. I am glad I have it. While I mostly use the boots, when hips or periformis is kicking in I use the hip attachment. The switch over in programming the air compressor is simple but involves several steps. I don't know the Air Relax system at all. I like the Normatec because of its sequential application of pressure and pulsing feature. I like that it releases the feet as it works the pressure up the leg. I had another system that always kept pressure on the feet and I felt it was too much, so I bought the Normatec. Hope this helps!

Thank you, @Sue DeJesus ! I appreciate your comments, and after what you wrote, I'm leaning toward the hip attachment.

By the way - you'll enjoy Augusta. It can be hot (like Chattanooga was this past Fall), but there is great hospitality in that town, and they do a wonderful job hosting the race there. :-)

  • @Wendy Kelly I have the Normatec boots and hip attachment shorts. I don't use the shorts very much, but as Sue said it is nice to have when the glutes are talking really loud!

@Wendy Kelly I was able to try a pair at one of the Ironman expos and that sold me on having them. I was having hip/periformis issues at the time and sent straight to the hotel and for the next several hours was in and out of them and had no issues racing. So while I don't always use them, I'm so glad to have them when I DO need them. So if you have a chance to try them you could see, that's what tipped me over the edge to buy. I already had a different brand boot I was using which I ended up selling after I got the Normatec.

And yes, I've done Augusta several years ago and had a good time in spite of the heat! :)

  • Thank you both @Sheila Leard and @Sue DeJesus ! This really does help.

  • Air relax has the hip attachment as well. I don’t use it but I know @Gabe Peterson has them.

  • @Sue DeJesus do you mind elaborating on the programming changes to the air compressor that you're referring to for the hip attachment? I've had my Normatec boots and hip setup for a little over a year now. While I LOVE the boots, I never really felt like the hip attachment did anything for me, so now I'm curious if this was just user error on my part in not setting the compressor up properly. I just went back and re-read the instructions and there's no mention of programming specific to the hip attachment so I'm curious to know how you're setting up the compressor for hips? Thanks!
