Swimming With Music? Anyone have a recommendation?

Thinking about a swim MP3 player like this one (http://www.finisinc.com/P-130030/Swimp31g) to take some of the bordeom out of my OW swims as I may be swimming a lot by myself this fall.

Anyone have a recommendation for a player?  Brand and model?  And headphones also, I guess?

Also, I know they make waterproof covers, but do I really want to use my iPod in the water?

Thanks for any help.

  • I know you're a good swimmer, Johnny boy (while I'm not so confident in the water, especially the OW), but why scare us (me) by swimming by yourself, music or not?
  • Hi John: I have that player and have been very happy to have music while I swim. Only drawback: it gets knocked around in my swim bag. I've had it turn itself on somehow. Heard music while hanging up the bag and finally remembered where it would come from. I wish it had an FM radio sometimes.

  • John I am using the H2o Audiocover with a 2nd generation shuffle.  Works with Shuffle that I already had and is small.  Only complaint is that the ear plugs take some getting use to.  One of my friends has a Finnis and he likes it too.

  •  I also have the h20 audio one that fits my shuffle inside it.  I like it OK.  I have found that if I knock the headphones out of my ears for any reason it pretty much sucks for the rest of the session.  My sis has the finis one and that seems better.  However, just being able to stick the shuffle in mine is awesome.

I swim alone in open water all the time.  Really do not see how it is dangerous. Not here anyhow.  Biggest danger would be me running into one of my neighbors docks or swim rafts.  I think I would deserve any bump on the head and really doubt I could knock myself out.  Really no boats out in the am.  Can hear them from really far away anyhow and I stay close to shore.  Biggest worry is having the workout interrupted by a neighbor tempting me with coffee or treats.

  • I have the h2o audio case also with my 3g nano in it.  I think it works decently but only if you have the ear bud headphones; the old black ones are terrible and never seal in your ear correctly.

  • John - I have the Finis Swimp3 and really like it. Sometimes when pushing off the wall it moves would be my only complaint. I am still "man down" for about another week and won’t be using mine for a while. If you want to give it a try i can send it up. I’ll load up all your favorite Britney Tunes.

  • I'm pretty happy with the SwimP3 player. It's a little bit of a pain if you have a mac and you're pulling music off iTunes. You have to change everything over to mP3 format. Also as far as I can tell, you really can't pick the order of music. When it shuffles it plays songs twice in a row a lot more than I'd expect something being totally random. Otherwise, it's pretty good. Also, if you're wearing a cap you have to get your goggles really loose to get everything to fit right. It might not seem too tight first, but perhaps because it conducts sound through your jaw bone, it will give you a headache if it's not loose enough. So just loosen if your jaw/ear area gets strangely sore and it should be fine.
  • Thanks everyone!  I appreciate all the feedback.

Simply for ease with iTunes, etc., I decided to go with the iPod 2nd gen and got it on eBay for $40.  The waterproof case was 50% off for $20 on the H2o site and I got their $60 Laird Hamilton waterproof headphones.  Hopefully it all works out.

    Thanks again for the feedback.

  • Let us know how that works out John! Sounds like a nice setup and not too pricey either.
  • One thing about my SwiMP3 - I think it is possessed sometimes. It turns itself on and runs out the battery occasionally. Other than that, I enjoy it.

  • Hi All:

Got my items, set it up and went for my first swim OW with it yesterday,  Sound was good and all went well with the tech.  The interesting thing is I hated having music with me!  Not what I expected.  I guess I didn't realize that when I do my weekly long OW swims that they are hard cuz I push it, but relaxing and refreshing.  I have time to think and sort stuff out in my head.  No distractions . . . just me and the water.  And when I am done I kinda feel like I had a mini vacation.  When I put the music on that all went away.

So, I guess it will be for the pool instead.  Cuz I really do hate swimming in the pool and the music should help.

Thanks again for all your help.

  • Wow John! Good to know! Thanks for that feedback. I won an H20 cover for an older version of the ipod shuffle and just ordered the shuffle so I could use that setup during OWS. But you have a great point. Plus I was wondering about how I would feel since the quiet allows me to zone out. I'll bet I have the same experience.
  • @Michelle = Ya, was interesting. Let me know what you think.
