[EN] Taking Control of 2020 Like a Boss 👊

2020 may very well be the season that never was. But that shouldn't stop you from doing what you know and love.

-

It's literally a different world than four weeks ago, and for many it's a time of fear and concern. There's so much to absorb and so little capacity (it seems) to do so. I am reminded of a quote by Marie Curie, who once said:

"Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood."
A huge part of why life feels so foreign right now, even scary, is that our daily routines are gone. I don't know about you, but a large part of the way I function in the world is built off of my daily rituals and habits.

These small actions give me semblance of control, even order, as my family and I say incredibly close to home and do our part to resist the pandemic.

While we must think of the greater good, we cannot neglect our bodies, minds or souls. For me, that rejuvenating force is my daily workout and connections with my teammates.

This newsletter is dedicated to giving you options to "stay normal" and, more importantly, stay connected.

Be safe and well,

~ Coach Patrick

Don't Just Sit There!
It’s hard to find any upside in the world right now, which is why you have to make your own. Here’s how we suggest you tackle the problems of social distancing and the lock-down mentality. There’s never been a better time to come up with something fun and new than right now. Virtually the entire planet is under some form of containment order. This means that daily life is effectively on hold, which puts unimaginable strain not only on our basic infrastructure but also on each individual person.

Are You Getting Virtual?
Within the span of a few weeks, virtual races and events are showing up all over the place. Ironman launches a Virtual Club (https://endurancenation.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=54dc221df5218e0dafff46b51&id=cfbcce198d&e=443f1a9157) , complete with events and awards. Their first event is already happening!

Then there are the more grassroots events like the Quarantine Backyard Ultra (https://endurancenation.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=54dc221df5218e0dafff46b51&id=b1c9febf87&e=443f1a9157) . In this unique event competitors have to run 4.167 miles every hour, on the hour. The rest of the time can be for resting. All data has to be uploaded to Stava, and some of the worlds best ultra runners are signed up this year! • I am very sad about all the cancelled events. I’m so sad for all the people who have trained hard and won’t get to do their events. I’m sad for all the sick people and the family members of those affected.

But I have to say... I love my new routine. I’ve been working from home for two weeks. I get up at 0500 and work for a couple of hours. I have a work telcon at 0930 and after that I go for my run. Um, turns out, I’m about a minute faster per mile at 1000 than I am at 0530! Wondering if I need to redo a run test! I have no events on the horizon and I hate testing, so leaning towards just continuing to run by feel.

i get home and eat and work some more. I don’t ever want to go back to an office again. I’m more productive at home. I’ve done a couple of telcons while on my run. I pay closer attention to a meeting walking around my living room or running than I do in a conference room.
