Starting a new year is an endurance sports tradition. New gear, new races, new goals. Normally the internet is full of ambition and promise...but these days the uncertainty of 2020 has carried over.
Everyone is striving for their "normal," including athletes like you. One helpful way to plan for your season in times of uncertainty is to pick more intermediate goals. Markers along the path that will make sure you are on track, but give you the flexibility to pivot as you aren't overcommitted.
* Instead of aggressively ramping your long run for a marathon; focus on establishing fitness through run frequency.
* Instead of obsessing over the fact you live in flatlandia but want to race in the hills (that you can’t get to), add a daily body weight strength routine to either your pre- or post-run routine.
* Instead of aggressively cutting calories to control body composition, focus on adding healthy food and hydration back into your diet to crowd out the crap.
All of these decisions will help you regardless of the event you’ve chosen. Pick choices that create long-term positivity and exploit the heck out of them.
Onwards!
