Heat/humidity and hydration

Last night I learned a hard lesson.  Temps in the mid 90's, 100% humidity.  That is just how it is down here in the summer in south Louisiana.   I have never really had a problem with cramping etc.  Last night was my long run session.  90 min. with some fun stuff mixed in that time.  By the time I finished my first 5 min. Z3/ interval I was totally spent.  I was recovering at 10:00 min/mile and my heart rate was 165-170.  Upper things were starting to cramp.  Then I started to think back through the day what I had hydrated with to prepare for my run this evening.  Four or five cups of coffee.  Yeah that's right, I hadn't drank any water all day and went out in that heat to run for 90 min.  Lesson learned.  Head hung low as I had to walk miles back to my car.

Just had to vent.  Felt like an idiot.

  • Hey, Stephen, if it makes you feel better...when I started training for my first race (Rhode Island 70.3 in July last year) I was doing long runs like that, and long bikes. One Sunday morning, I was literally standing in my living room talking to my wife, about to head out on a long run (did the long bike the day before) and I passed out and fell on the floor right in front of her. My wife is a nurse, so, she snatched me up and loaded both my daughter and me into the car and took me to the emergency room where they told me I was severly dehydrated!

It was crazy...but, I learned. I guess we all have experiences with learning that lesson in some 'hard' way!
  • Thanks for the reminder Stephen. It's sooooo easy to forget throughout the day to stay hydrated/fueled for that next workout. I think we've all made that mistake once or twice before.
  • South Florida has some heat as well.

Spend my time planning on how not to cook myself!

Love the passed out in front of your wife story. Mine would probably just tell me to suck it up and get training. (She was a Marine).

  • I think it's a Stephen thing. image Seriously, we all need to be reminded of this stuff...either through you sharing (thanks) or by making the same mistake ourselves!

  • When you live in the heat it seems like a common conversation topic in our house is "what color is your pee". This morning went out and did my FTP. On the road by 6:30 am. Off the bike by 8:00am and the temps are already in the mid 90s with 90 percent humidity and it not even August yet. We all try to muscle through this stuff, but you just have to respect the heat. The good thing is that you made it back without a trip to the hospital. Just remember every time you go out it is an opportunity to learn.
