Question about RR

I am doing a RR this weekend for Timberman, I have a question about what I should do about hydration. Last year i had my aero bottle with water and 2 bottles for infinit. Of course I was able to refill water on course at aide station. While doing my RR I wont have this option so do I wear my camelback for more water or do I just stop at the gas station at about mile 30 to refill.

Thanks

  • If you can hold off on stoping for very long that would be best. Can you wear a cycling jersey and carry the extra bottles in your pockets? That might be better because it would keep you using the aerobottle vs the camelback. Or can you add extra bottle holders to the back of the bike to carry the water (just for the RR of course). If none of these options work and you must stop- it's not horrible, just make the stop as short as possible.
  • Steve, I like the Camelbak option. I have a 100oz one and will be using it for my RR this year. On a hot day, it will buy you/me 3 hours of water...on a cool day, in combination with the 30 oz in the aerodrink, it could mean no stops.
Also, for the 6 mile run following the ride I will switch out to my running hydration pack instead of a fuel belt. They're not the most aero and can make sloshing sounds, but it sure beats having to stop.
  •  No reason to get that anal if you do not want to.  If you are not going to race with the camelback there is no reason to do a RR with it.  Stopping for 3 minutes to fill the bottle is not going to make any difference.  Besides, how are you going to get e hot dog mid ride if you do not stop at a gas station?

  • @chris, I carry them in my bento box

  • Worst case: a bottle stuffed in the back waistband of shorts a la Faris Al-Sultan. But it works!

That exactly what I do. I put my multi hour INfinit in my waist band and just find water for the ride on the route. Works like a charm.

  • This could just be a 'personal' thing, but, I just can't bring myself to wear a camelback on my road/tri bike. Mountain bike...okay. Road/tri bike...no so much. Along the same line, it cracks me up when I see these 'dabbler' cyclists here in Memphis wearing backpacks while they ride. I know a few of them might actually be commuting, but, the majority aren't. I have always wanted to pull over to ask what the hell they need to carry in their backpack?

Is that just a Memphis, TN thing'?
  • If you stop at the Shell station just past the NH Speedway, you can score a hotdog with that water. image

Another thing you can do, is stash a little cooler up near the turn around when you're driving in to Ellacoya (I imagine you come from 93??). There's a school there and plenty of places. Pick it up on your way back out.

  • @leigh, that is what I did last year at the shell station, quick pit stop and off I went maybe 5 minutes counting bathroom.

I may just do that is stop at shell, get my self reloaded and off I go.

  • depending on where you ride (if you do loops), you can stop at your car for a refill... I like to have a cooler in mine so I have cold water to refill, and my fuel belt ready to go for the run... which is also chilled when I start.

but, my bigger question... I didn't know we had an RR this weekend (I'm also doing Timberman)... unless I'm off on my schedule.  I actually just started HIM prep (after a few weeks back in OS) and am in week 8 of 12... thought the RRs were week 6 and 10.

  • @becky no RR for you I am doing it because I can and I screwed up a bit on the schedule.

I am riding the actual course on saturday so not loop.
