Blurred Vision

I have a wierd issue with my right eye on long rides.  I am OK up until the 2-2.5 hour mark and my right eye get a blury spot.  The spot always starts in the same place (inside on the left side) and slowly spreads across my eye.  It has never gotten to the point where I can't see, just blury.  I have tried riding with/without sunglasses, both with the same results.  I have no trouble with my left eye, which I would consider my weak eye.  Once I finish riding, it takes about an hour for my eye to return to normal.  I don't have any issues during OS when I am on the trainer for longer periods and I don't have any problems while swimming or running.  This is not really debilitating, just really annoying.

  • All I can say is that I've had some vision issues of my own (more like odd focus problems for me) that I originally noticed during trianing and which now occur at any time of day. Gotta love having what looks like a fuzz on your computer screen and realizing that it's actually something that your eye is creating. I have also experience migraines during workouts and other "orientation" issues that seem linked to my eyes. I finally made an appointment with an ophthalmologist to get stuff checked out. It's all just too strange and like you, I find it, annoying. I do also find it a bit scary that it has gone on for so long. I see the dude next Tuesday so if I get any indication of workout related vision stuff I will let you know.

    Be safe!
  • I am going to assume that this isn't a side effect of steroid use. image

It could be an ocular migraine. There is no pain with these, but they do impact vision and some people experience them after intense exercise. Some people just tolerate it and keep going. It might be a good thing to have this checked out by the doctor to make sure it isn't something more serious. Due to my eye shape I am at risk for retinal detachment, so I am a real wimp when it comes to eye issues.
  • Have you ruled out sunscreen? Is it possible that you rub the same eye area when you start to sweat?
  • Blurred vision spreading across one field of vision...I don't like the sound of that. I'm no ophthalmologist, but I would have your PCP check it out (listen for carotid stenosis or get a carotid ultrasound) and/or refer you to ophthalmology or vascular surgery depending on what he/she finds.
  • @John, Thats a different twist I haven't even thought to consider. I'll as my doc.

@Tom, I would really love for it to be as simple as sun screen. We live at altitude and with the history of basal cell carsinoma on my ear, I basically live with the stuff all the time (even in the winter).

@Kit, thanks for some professional advice. It doesn't hurt at all, just really annoying. I have to see my PCP for an annual checkup, I will mention it to him then.
  • Chuck - whats your hydration like on those rides? Could be a sign of dehydration in you - sure, weird its just one eye but who knows what would happen if you carried on riding in that state.
Just a thought, may be totally throwaway idea but worth mentioning i thought.
