Cycling in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Hello ENrs, I do NOT know where to post this question. I am going on a trip with my DH for 8 days to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we are flying business so I can bring my bike on the plane for FREE. I have googled the "area", there are bike shops there, BUT, extremely humid 80%, hot 89-90 degrees, don't speak the language, many do speak English, many Euorpeans and Asian population, I went last year and worked out all week in the gym of the hotel. Want to bring my bike BUT I only have a Garmin 310 XT that doesn't allow downloading International Maps (for directions, getting places etc.). Anyone know anyone who has ever taken their bike to such a foreign place just to "ride" and get some good work outs in? Husband feels schetchy about me being safe. Just trying to get some feedback.....

There's also lots of KL routes mapped at mapmyride.com: http://www.mapmyride.com/find-ride/malaysia/kuala-lumpur
Awesome Chris!! I did and found some greet rides. My husband is mostly worried about "safety" issues for a white female alome on a bike. Have you been there and cycled there ? Thanks so much, I have been checking daily for a response, so very glad I got one
Can't help you with the cycling as I haven't done it in Malaysia but I wouldn't think being a white woman wouldn't put you at any more risk than being anyone else. The only worries would be the traffic and the drivers which is the same worry you'd have anywhere. Oh and don't forget to bike on the left side of the road
If you've got a free weekend though I'd recommend a getaway up to Penang (3.5 hour drive or short flight) or a 1 hour flight to Langkawi, home to the Malaysian Ironman as well as all manner of beach and water activities. Or if you're up for a little more adventure, try a 2-day guided trek/climb up Kota Kinabalu. I haven't done it yet but it's high on my list.
Hello, was "talked out of bringing bike" by some local friends who said too many "kidnappings, rapes and murders" going on. Instead did lots of long swims and runs, did miss bringing my bike though. Thanks for the helpful hints though, maybe next year
