Tour of California 2011 is Open for Team Registration

Team,

Our 2010 participants have had their first crack at registering for the 2011 camp. Returning Characters:

  • Bill Truax (3x ToC, '11 will be 4x)
  • Lynda Neuman (Bill's wife, same)
  • Kitima (2nd ToC)
  • Nemo and Mr Nemo (Joe will be driving for us :-)
  • Leigh Boyle (3rd ToC
  • Dave Boyle (3rd ToC)
  • Peter Geisin
  • Marc Robards
  • Michele Cellai
  • David Corso (2nd ToC)
  • Mike Allen (2nd ToC)
  • Aaron Burnstein

The ToC roster for '11 is capped at 20 campers. 8 slots currently available

Cost: $2995.

Camp includes:

  • Riding, SAG, support, breakfast, lunch, training food, etc for the stages that we ride. Of course, they haven't published the stages, routes, etc but generally the camp runs (and you ride) Sunday through the following Saturday.
  • All lodging from Saturday night through Friday night. Most people get a redeye out of LA on Saturday, the last day of the camp. If you decide to stay in LA that Saturday and fly out on Sunday, that lodging is on you.
  • The camp doesn't include dinners because we don't want to put you on a budget after a hard day of riding.
  • This time we will offer a bike rental service, for an extra fee, if you'd rather not deal with flying/shipping your bike out here. This of course will be an extra expense and I can't really say how much at this time...but there you go, more details later.

Are you in?

  1. Email me at admin@endurancenation.us with ToC'11 in the subject line
  2. Mail a check for $500, your non-refundable deposit, to Endurance Nation, 607 Parker Ave, Monrovia, CA 91016
  3. Balance due, non-refundable, by March 15th

Questions? Please ask here. Thanks!

We're getting closer so time to talk logistics and more!

ToC Map and Stages

Note that the Tour has not yet announced the actual routes of each stage. At this point we can make some good guesses but expect me to update you with a more details for each stage after they publish the routes.

ToC Itinerary:

Thursday, May 12

We will not be able to transport bike boxes with us during the camp. Therefore you must either meet us at my house with your bike on Saturday and drive up with us, or ship your bike to us to arrive no later than Thursday, May 12. I will assemble your bike and it will meet you in Sacramento.

Friday, May 13

Bike assembly at Rich's house. I may be able to pick a few people up at the airport (LAX), as we'll be going down there on Friday to pick up the vans.

Saturday, 14: Travel to Sacramento

  • Flying to Sacotomato? schedule your flight to arrive no later than 4pm Saturday.
  • Driving from LA? we will leave my house at 8am for the drive up to Sacramento. Expect 6.5 hours drive time.
  • Please tell us ASAP if you plan to meet us in Sacramento or drive up with us.
  • Once we pick everyone up, we'll drive from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe, about 2 hours.
  • Saturday lodging: Best Western Timber Cove Lodge

Sunday, May 16, Stage 1: South to North Lake Tahoe

  • We will ride from the hotel
  • Ride plan: Looks simple, along the west side of the lake.
  • Lodging Sunday night: TBD

Monday, May 17, Stage 2: North Lake Tahoe to Sacramento

    • Ride from: Hotel
    • Ride plan: If you look at the map, you'll see the ride finishes in Sacramento but starts the next day in Auburn. Since we will pass by Auburn during the ride, and the last 30-40 miles of the stage are on crappy roads with a lot of wind, I expect will pull out in/near Auburn and likely see the Tour as the pass.
    • Lodging Monday night: Auburn, Best Western Golden Key

Tuesday, May 18, Stage 3: Auburn to Modesto

Wednesday, May 19, Stage 4: Livermore to San Jose

  • Ride from: Hotel
  • Ride plan: Note that Livermore isn't far at all from San Jose but the vets know that this is also the domain of Lake Calaveras and Sierra Rd. I expect they will do a circuit to include the the road around the lake and the climb up Sierra Rd a few times (!). This could be a cool day for us to ride one lap of the circuit, park the vans at the bottom of Sierra Rd, then ride up to watch the tour go by. We did something similar to this in 2008.
  • Lodging Wednesday night: Monterrey, Best Western Beach Resort Monterey. Note that we won't have to drive through SFO during rush hour traffic to get to our hotel. Yeehaw!

Thursday, May 20, Stage 5: Monterrey to Paso Robles

  • Ride from: Big Sur
  • Ride plan: this will the most awesomest day of the Tour!! We will drive down the coast to Big Sur and start you from there. You'll ride down Pacific Coast Highway to Naciemento Furgesson Rd, climb over the coastal range (climbs ~2500ft in 7mi, 1000ft of that in the first 1.5mi), and then ride through Fort Hunter Ligget army base. 2009 campers: we rode through the base, descended west to the coast and back up. This year we'll do the opposite but will ride down PCH first. You don't know it yet, but PCH in May is why you ride a bike and the ride through the base is friggin' awesome!
  • Lodging Thursday night: Buellton, Pea Soup Andersen's Inn

Friday, May 21, Stage 6: Solvang Time Trial

  • Ride from: Hotel
  • Ride plan: ~40 mile ride, as about half the TT course, out and back in Foxen Canyon, finish the TT course. We need to be off the course by about 10am. You're then free to change into civilian clothes to get your pro-cyclist stalk and pastry on in Solvang until about 3pm. At that time we'll pack up and drive to Monrovia (about 3hrs)
  • Lodging Friday night: Monrovia, TBD
  • Dinner: catered at Rich's house

Saturday, May 22: Claremont to Mt. Baldy, mountain top finish

  • Ride from: TBD
  • Ride plan: TBD. This is, truly, my backyard. The distance between Claremont and Mt. Baldy isn't much at all. I've been trying to figure out what routes they can take to make it very challenging. I expect there will also be some issues with road closures, etc, as the road to and up out of Mt. Baldy Village is very narrow and will be packed with hoards of locals. I expect we'll ride from my place, through the mountains along the ToC route to Mt. Baldy, get the bikes as close to the finish as we can while the vans park somewhere along the route (as close as they can get to Baldy. We'll then ride back to the vans.
  • Lodging: NONE, camp ends
  • Travel: recommend you book the last flight out of LAX. We should be able to take everyone to the airport.

Meals:

  • Breaksfast: provided by the hotels and we'll have food on hand to supplement
  • Lunch: you're ridin'! We don't have time for stinkin' lunch! But we usually do a good job of having sammiches, etc waiting for you at the vans so you can eat while we drive to the next hotel.
  • Dinner: on you, as we don't want to put you on budget after a long day on the road. Whenever possible we use the vans to get everyone to dinner, etc.

Gear List:

  • Clothing: recommend you bring minimum 3 complete sets of cycling kit. Also bring base and outer layers for all conditions: hot, cold, wet, dry, etc. We will do laundry midway through the camp.
  • Nutrition: we will have Infinit, Powerbar Perform, and Clifbars. Please bring/ship your own food if you need something special.
  • Spares/Tools: please bring/ship with your bike 5 x tubes, 2 x tires, 5 x Co2, multitool

  • One quick question. I have signed up for CdA next year, 6/25/2011. Is there enough time between ToC and the race?

    Pete
  • Good question. In '05, while training for CDA, I did a week long cycling camp through UT with similar ToC mileage, in May about the same timeframe as the current tour dates. It was an excellent volume pop and I had enough time to recover. Rode a 5:08 that year on the old course. The rub is that it will be very difficult to get any runs in. However I think as a group wencould create a 30-40' strides run every morning that you could participate in. We could hold ourselves accountable.

You will be extremely busy, with time for little else, but 3-4x strides sessions would be enough and we can leverage the group to make that happen. Riley is also good for accountability and I can just toss him in your room every morning, he'll drive you nuts until you run him :-)
  •  Do you have exact dates yet for the EN 2011 TOC?

  • @David: Don't know how accurate they are but I did some searching last night and the dates seem to be May 15-21, 2011.
  • David, I don't believe anything has been announced officially (Peter, please share the link where you found those dates) but it's generally the same "place" in Feb (old tour) or May (new tour). It will likely keep some of the same cities and stage routes while adding, replacing others.

I expect they'll announce the stage cities in September or October and the routes in Feb or March.

  • In case you are on the fence: End of Day 1 Quote from yours truly:

    "BEST DAY OF RIDING EVER!!!!!"

Little did I know it only got better as the week went on! Seriously, if you are having fun watching TdF and wishing you were there- you won't want to miss out on this opportunity!

PS- Joe's gonna love being called "Mr Nemo" all week! Or at least I'm gonna love teasing him about it :-) We gotta keep that one.
  • Hey now, don't forget me! I already put in my deposit for '11.

Hey now, don't forget me! I already put in my deposit for '11.

    Sorry! Fixed!

  • Curious whether there will still be a couples 10% discount.
  • I'm getting a tentative YES from the wife on the ToC11!

We need to look at our calendars once we get back from vacation.

    Vince
  • Hi Rich,
I will give you a verbal yes if you think the timing for IM France next year is good, 6/25/11, same day as CDA which I have already committed to. I could really use the climbing miles in preparation for that course. Maybe its good that I sign up, Peter G and I can trade off the RAP duties.
I'm racing tomorrow but i'll be back to you this coming week for sure.
    Thanks, Mike
    Wicked fun last year!!!
  • @Olivia, yes, we can do that.

@Vince, would be great to have you on board!

@Mike, awesome! Let's hope I don't need to send you down a hill to push Dr. Kit up again!

  • @Rich:

Maybe this deserves another thread, but...

My wife and I are considering a ToC trip next year with the young 'uns, but I can guarantee that I will not have the time to do an entire ToC Camp with The Haus... however, I WOULD be interested in trying to plan it so I can ride at least one day with the team. Would you be willing to consider a daily fee to cover support, etc. for a day or two of riding with the team?
  • Maybe a dumb question, but does this include camping out or staying in hotels? The ride from SF to LA for charity is completely camping, so I wanted to check.

Seems awesome. Definitely want to do. Just have to figure out if next year is the year.
  • Hotels. Joanne (Rich's wife) takes good care of us with the accommodations.
  • ok awesome. and if my girlfriend wants to come out for a few days, is this possible, or does everyone have to ride? We're in California, so she could drive along but only if it's possible to hang out with us when we're not riding.
  • Adam,

We are in hotels, not camping...but I'd like to figure out to get people to pay $2900 to ride a bike and sleep in tents for 7 days

Fine for your GF to come but I won't have room in the vans for anyone other than paying customers, luggage, and admin staff. Also, accommodations are dual occupancy, ie, two campers, or solo for an additional $500.

Short answer is, yes, we can work it out, but what I can't promise is a spot in a van as I need to reserve that space for paying campers.

  • I would love to jump on board however I am doing IMTX on May 21, hopefully I will be able to participate in the 2012 TOC camp!
  • Is this closed yet?

Mr. Max forgot I want to do this and scheduled all of my vacay time. But I am hoping to get around that problem.

  • Nope, still open, would love to have you and Max join us!

  • did you hear did you hear- "the 2011 edition of ToC is hoping to add an alpe d'huez like climb with 10 of the toughest miles to date in this race." image

Now where did I put that triple crank.....hmmmmmmmm

  • My wife is the best. During our car ride to kid's CC race we were just discussing my ironman race plans plans for 2011 and she said" dont forget about that tour of Cali ride you mentioned this past spring". If there's still openings I'm in.
  • Aaron, we have room! Please send deposit check for $500 to
    Endurance Nation
    607 Parker ave
    Monrovia, ca 91016
  •  Fantastic!  Looking forward to this.  Missed mail pickup today so will drop it in the mail Tuesday.  2011 shaping up to be a season of cool, fun stuff for me.  Can't wait.

  • YEAH!!! Looking forward to seeing you and your wife in Cali!
  • As some of you saw in the other thread, looks like I'm going to bail on ToCA 2011 to go cycling in Mallorca Spain. Had to make a choice (as if there was really a choice to make, LOL), and ToCA had to lose - THIS year. I definitely plan on being back in 2012.

@Rich, I emailed you yesterday about starting the whole back-out process. Please advise!
  • R, Is there any space left for another flatlander??? I need some fitness for IM France in June????
    Mike
  • I know it's a little away, but I had some time and was going to get started looking into the logistics of this trip. Where should we plan on flying in and out of? If we are shipping bikes were should we ship them to?
