Motivation.............!

So I've been taking it easy...got married...nice honeymoon...plus another holiday...ate too much, drank too much...and now I'm 14 weeks away from a 70.3 and 10lbs heavier than I'd like to be. Oh yeah and for the next 2 months being outside is like hanging out in a sauna/steam room.  MUST GET TRAINING....MUST GET TRAINING...what do you guys do the get motivated again?

  • Well, this might be a girl thing, but sometimes I'll buy a new pool toy or a new swimsuit, or maybe a new pair of shorts. Trying out the new gear gives me something to look forward to.
  • What Nemo said. Garmin. Powermeter. Carbon fiber thingies.

Racing kinda just does it, too. Fourteen weeks is a long time away. I'd sign up for something shorter soon to get the legs remembering that they like to do this crazy racing stuff.
  • Totally agree with the short race signup- I am recently less than motivated to swim, so I signed up for a quick sprint this Saturday to motivate myself a bit!
  • I may be weird...but, I don't anything but A races, so, I can't really speak to the 'sign up for a sprint' strategy. I DO like getting some new gear. Also, you could 'cash in' on probably having a few SAUs and get away for one night (like a Saturday night) and do a long weekend...like a ride/run on Saturday and a swim/ride on Sunday then come home. Something different, in a different location, with a buddy if possible, would likely give you something fun to kick things off again.
  • Or try something different to kick start things, like a long hike or mountain bike ride.
  • Sounds like you already have sufficient motivation:

    1. Lose ten pounds

    2. Impress the wife

    3. Aiming for Taupo in 2011.

  • Having my tri clothes fit a bit too tight always motivates me to put down the spoon and step away from the ice cream.
Watching videos of Jens Voight is also very motivating.
  • what do you guys do the get motivated again?

just lay out your run clothes the night before, set the coffee machine and then the alarm and when it buzzes, get up, put on your run clothes, drink some coffee, eat a banana, and head out. that's it! smile..... substitute bike or swim clothes if you like.. but the hardest part, is deciding that you are gonna do it. so put the past weeks of weight gain behind you and move forward.... being a newlywed has got to be great so enjoy! 14 weeks is 3.5 months so plenty of time to ditch the weight and be trained...

first week back, do not worry about any pacing, distance or other, all you are concerned about is getting back into the routine and all of the packing of gear that goes with tri sport! do not try to set yourself up for failure in the first week back.... be kind to yourself. if you feel like walking do it, cut the ride short, don't run as long.. just go thru the motions.. make some new tng partners....2nd week back, add in good nutrition if you haven't done so already.... 3rd week back, you should be feeling some power/speed/ and like your old self, it takes 21 days for a new habit to form, 4th week back, even a bit race frisky... 5th week back to tng, you better recover!.. 6th week back, a big bump up in power/pace and I bet 4 lbs lost! at least. etc....

  • I use the forums and team EN for accountability. Post your goals here and then check in often to let people know how it is going. I thnk everyone in the house knew my goal last year, but it made me think twice before skipping a workout or giving up in a race.

What are your goals for Taiwan 70.3 and what is your plan to reach them?
  • @Chris - Everybody puts out good stuff. My addition would be to caution you a bit to work back into things carefully. Too often we hear people say "I missed three workouts because I was sick/injured...so I'm going to make it all up today!" And of course, the next day they are back online complaining about being...sick and injured.

Work back into it deliberately - start easy, work back up to where you think you 'should' be. 14 weeks is a LONG time.

    You'll do great!
    Mike
  • I pull a lot of motivation from the EN forums... just seeing how other folks are crushing it gets me going in the morning (like right now as I wake up before my swim RR).

Also, since I live by some popular trails seeing other people out runningwalkingiking serves as a sort of peer pressure (if they can do it, I can do it).

I agree with Mike, ease into it. Trying to catch up within a week will likely lead to injury. Good luck!
