California Races - Warmup for IM AZ 2010

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to find some good warmup races to IM AZ that are local. I don't have any plans at the moment for racing before, and it would be nice to have some warm ups before November.

I'm based in Southern California. I saw on the general forums that someone is doing the Big Kahuna, 70.3 in Santa Cruz on September 11th. Any recommendations on races and whether this one is a good one? My only concern on the Big Kahuna is it's more hilly than IM AZ and a beach swim, so not apples to apples, but still a good distance nonetheless.

     Santa Barbara Long Course Triathlon - last weekend of August, Sat Aug 28.

    1 mile swim, 35 mile bike, 10 mile run

    Adam, we recommend you do races in route to your IM, not so you can use the races to simulateorwhatever the IM course but rather to give you a short term focus: you are focused on training for an HIM, do that, then switch over to IM training. This keeps you focused on getting faster, not longer, and preserves your head across many months.

    That said, I've heard that Big Kahuna is a good race.

    I did the the post on Big Kahuna.  Definitely nothing like IMAZ for the swim (ocean), bike (rolling hills on Highway 1) and run (asphalt streets and a short trail along the Pacific Ocean bluffs).   Swim is more like a bay swim and the bike is fast coming back the 28 miles.  The rolling hills are really no big deal.  Last mile of the run is on sand! 

    Last year the swim was cancelled due to fog, but for some reason it was done in October.  This year they moved it back to September as in previous years.

    Is it a good one?  For a smaller non-IM brand race, it rocks!  Well supported and getting a chocolate dipped ice cream on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk after the race is a nice way to end the day.

    I did Santa Barbara with Dave last year and it is a hilly bike and nice pretty flat run.  Ocean swim but more of a bay like swim like BK.  I recommend it also.
