Outseason plans and racing

Has anyone done an outseason plan only and then done a half?  I've been trying to plan ahead, but I will not be able to get the long weekends in required by my half plan and was wondering that if I can one long ride/run a week while doing the outseason plan, will I fare okay?  So far, I have been the strongest I've been in 3 years because of the plan, my endurance might be in question but think I might manage fine.  Any thoughts?  Thanks!

  • Hi Dan... not exactly.  I dropped out of OS and did 6 weeks of HIM before my first in June.  Then I went back to 5 weeks of OS and am now doing 5 weeks of HIM to prep for my next.  I can say that folks in the house think that OS is enough... and the first go round my first weekend of HIM prep was an RR... I was quite happily surprised that I could bike for 56 miles straight out of OS!

  • Dan- I started OS in January and did all 20 weeks, finishing May 23rd. Then 10 days "transition"- read as "farting around" and doing what felt good, then 2 weeks scuba diving. Now - forgetting that I was seasick for those 2 weeks and could not eat, I returned and did the HIM 3 days later. I had cleared the plan with Patrick. He felt it was fine and it was basically what I did last year exceot that I started the IM plan between OS start and HIM, but quit 2 weeks later. I did get a few 2 hour outdoor rides this year, but last year was strictly on the trainer and I PR'd.

If folks can get TOC ready with OS, then you can get HIM ready, just do the swim hack as well.
  •  Excellent, thank you everyone!

  •  @Rich: I know I asked you about this at the IMLP camp a little while ago, I just didn't remember what you said.... I'll bring a notebook next time!!!  Thanks man.
