IMUSA 2011 -- Who's In???

I saw a lot of folks in line (including me, don't tell Rich!) and many more online. Who's officially in?

  • 2011 will be an off year for me (aka family vacations that don't involve S/B/R), but I will be there in 2012.

  • While sitting in the recovery area i thought signing up for 2011 was a dumb move on my part. Now two days after raceing i'm glad i signed up. See you there
  • Like Brad, next year is an off year from IM racing for me... after 3 years in a row I need a mental/physical break from it...will focus on shorter stuff with maybe 1 or 2 half IMs next year, but right now just want to focus on having fun w/ my fitness and training for a bit w/ no real structure image

congrats to all 2010 IMUSA participants and for those doing 2011...
  • I'm in but first, IM Canada in five weeks!

    Cheers,

  • The registration process was longer than any IM marathon I have done but I managed to suffer through.  I figured if I got in line early [a little after 7] I would be out of there early and able to work most of the day.  Walked out of the Gym a little after 11:40.  They need to learn about that really new technology where you can swipe a credit card through a reader.  Having people manually enter the CC info into active was painful.

Regardless - plan is to bring bigger watts and fewer kg to the 40-44 party next summer!

  • Can anyone tell me if there was online entry available for IMUSA in 2011? I plan to sign up for this race for 2012 and want to know if I will need to plan a trip out there next summer to sign up for it. Thanks for the insight!
  • Lisa - I posted yesterday that I tested online registration (didn't enter) and would have been able to register at 1201 and again at 1230. I tried again at 1:07pm and it was sold out to general entry. So online closed somewhere between 30 and 67 minutes. However, that doesn't mean that any 2012 slots will be available online next year.
  • Yes there was some online registration it's hard to say what next year will bring.  If the economy is better that may force the race to in-person only.

While I would highly recommend the trip out to spectate and volunteer you may also consider the community fund slots.  They have changed the name I believe.  If you can't spare the time to get down I believe $1100 will get you in.

  • I'm in.  Agreed, even with volunteer registration, it was a lot of waiting.  In line at 7:30.  Out at 12:00

  •  It likely would have been more cost effective for me to just buy a multisports.com slot than to waste a day standing in the line like that. 1080 is really not that much more than 600.   Hell I just checked and they still have slots for Moo this year.  Besides then I would have gotten their awesome training plan [that looks a whole lot like the one in their book they sell for 14.95] emailed to me in 4 week blocks by heather fuhr.

Or I guess it might be better spend the extra 75 bucks and go community fund.  People always talk about it being tax deductible but my charity donations never really end up saving me anything.  I guess it goes to a better cause that Roch and Frey...

  • I'm in after registering online. About halfway through a slow internet connection I got an error message (about 12:12, had been on since 11:59) and had to restart. Still slow, so I thought I wasn't going to get in (and was actually glad and less stressed).....then it all just kicked in and worked at about 12:23. My reaction: "oh shit, what have I done. I just registered for an f---ng ironman".
  • I'm 90% sure I'm going to do it via Community slot. Filled out most of it last night but decided I better get the official OK from my wife.
  • I was still on the post-race high and for two minutes thought about going in for 2011 as I saw many friends waiting on line. I went with my original decision to take next year off and possibly sign up for 2012.

I will be giving back next year and I will be volunteering in some capacity. I had no idea just how much those volunteers can make your day.
  • Tried to register through community slot, but Active.com wouldn't process my app...we'll see what customer service says!
  • Signed up on Saturday. While waiting in line wasn't sure about it at all, and on top of that the line was ridiculously long.
Now I figure I can try to improve on the time from this year.
  • OK, today it worked, so I'm officially in! Ironman #2 on the way!
  • @Bill ; I;ve never signed up for a community fund slot but as I recall it may take a little time for them to open up after the race.  With all the changes though this may not be the case.

  • We've got a good group forming! Awesome! I know that Greg Charbeneau is in as well....gonna be fun!

  • Hey Coach P,
Lets start working on the community housing plan. Maybe start a informal sign up as to who would be interested in getting a block of rooms, a few condo's etc. Keep cost down, have everybody in a central location, etc. Let me know what I can do to help.

  • x2 on community housing plan.  I'm in touch with a couple of local rental agents and volunteer to coordinate this.

  • @Dave - I'm in for some sort of community housing. I'm thinking it will be just me and my daughter (11 year old). We'd be up for whatever, so let me know if anyone has a suggestion on where to stay. Not clear yet whether we'll fly or drive (yes, I do realize it's ~20 hours, but what the heck!).
  •  I'm in.  Looking forward to improving on the first time 'round.

  •  I am interested in hearing about community housing.  Will have my wife and kidlets and have a buddy brining his wife and kidlet as well.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a Community Fund slot DOUBLES your entry fee.  Yeah.  Let that wash over you for a moment......

Ok, back to reality: I held my nose and paid the fee.  I give more than that to charity each year, so it just means I will now be less charitable elsewhere.  If it is a zero-sum game, then I guess I have to be ok with it.

Anyway, LP2011 will be my third Ironman race and first time at Lake Placid.  Looking forward to the journey.

Online registration was open for about 15 minutes.  Active had me in (I entered at 12:00:01pm), had me fill out the forms, and crashed me out.

Part of me feels good about this as I think it is a positve statement about the economy.  Part of me would rather have taken a swift kick in the butt than pluck down $1200, but I did it.

  • In as well (signed up Saturday - good way to go in the future if possible, knew I would need to come back)
  • I'm in! Can't wait! This will be my first Ironman, and this is the reason I joined EN--looking forward to some quality training!
  • I am in! This will be my 3rd IMUSA........great venue! Love it. Cheers, Greg
  • So what are folks training plan strategies. Coach P's thread says if you race May/June/July to do October OS. I looked over the calendar, and that would have us starting on October 4th and ending on February 20th. The race is on July 24th, so my math says the 12 week build would start on May 2nd. That would theoretically give you a full 10 weeks between end of OS and beginning of build. I think most folks just end up throwing in a couple of basic months. January OS is definitely too late, so is anyone thinking of November? We had a pretty decent group in that one last year. Would be great to know what folks are planning so we can get to know each other during the OS. What say y'all?

What early season races are folks thinking of? I'm plnaning to do the Birkebeiner ski race which is a 50K race on February 26th. It's the biggest ski race in North America, and I was planning to do it last year with Noodle, but we had a death in the family and I wasn't able to race. Looking forward to it, so hopefully we'll have good snow again this year. Also planning on racing the City of Lakes Loppet on February 6th. Last year I added the ski training on Tuesday nights (in place of brick run), Friday afternoons, and Sundays, and it seemed to work out fine. The variety was great, and my legs held up fine. Skiing definitely made the winter much more managable...changes your whole perspective on snow!
  • I'm going with the Nov. OS start date, which will give me 6 weeks before the 12 week IM plan. During those 6 weeks I'll either do the basic month or add in a few more weeks of OS. It will be March in the Northeast, so I should be able to get outside for the basic...but you never know.
  • OK, I'm in for November OS too.
