Garmin 310 purchasers beware

As I'm sure most have seen, the 310 had a problem with screen cracks and strap pins when the first came out.  I spoke with one of the engineers at Garmin who told me that they had made modifications to address these issues.  I recently purchased one at REI, and it appeared to me that it might be one of the old ones (the screen was flush with the case or maybe even raised a little).  So I ordered one online, and sure enough the new one had a recessed screen.  REI, of course, took the old one back with no problem, and was going to send it back to Garmin instead of putting it back on the shelf.  But look out if you're buying one - there is still old stock even at REI.

  • Thanks for the heads up, I just bought one last week to replace the Timex - I'll have to check that mine is the new version.

  • Bob, Thanks for the warning.  Any chance you have a picture of the difference between the new one and old one that you could share?

  • Matt - I'm not at home this weekend, but I'll try next week and see if it shows the recessed screen on the new one.  The first one is back at REI.  Both were quite noticeable ione they are out of the box if you ran you finger over it.  The original stuck up quite a bit, and the new one is noticeably recessed.  Garmin wouldn't give me an ending serial number of the bunch that had problems, but the original one had a serial number that started with 1GM03 - the new one has a serial number that starts with 1GM11.
