PIC ADDED! EN´s shortest Race Report: Ironman Regensburg

A snapped chain at mile 90-something, 35-40 minutes for tech support.   Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, sitting on the side of the road is sitting on the side of the road.

  • Dave, that is just crushing. Did you manage to finish once the chain got resolved? I am really looking forward to this race next year. Watched the race on ironmanlive today. Looks like a great place to race. Where are you staying?
  • Oh Dave, how frustrating! That's just so sad, I have no words! Did you at least enjoy the trip?
  • Yes, what Nemo said! By all means, don't let a stupid thing like a broken chain ruin your trip and your mojo! Enjoy Germany and soak it up while you are there! There is always another chance to race!

  • Falls into the category of sh#* happens, doesn't it? Or the old Orthodox saying, "Man plans, God laughs." None of which makes one feel any better. Sorry that happened to you. Huge bummer after so much planning and effort. Hang tough and work  through the disappointment--that's what Ironmen do. image

  • I can't even imagine . . . .and what Nemo said also.

  • Sorry to hear that, Dave.

  • Oh, man! That totally sucks!

But if you have to be dealt out on a mechanical, at least you did it in a country with superior beer.
  • Absolutely stinks. But I hope you salvage the trip. Sorry about your bad luck.
  • I think "bummer" would be appropriate
  • Well phooey! That sucks!! I hope you are still salvaging the situation and having a good trip.
Curious, was it a 10 speed Shimano chain?
  • Uh...before anyone gets too teary eyed over Dave's race, the Ironman athlete tracker shows him finishing in 10:35:27!!!!! 1:04 swim, 5:50 bike, and 3:35 run!

SO...without further ado...WAY TO GO DAVE! Awesome race. Bummer about the chain, but congratulations on pulling it together and putting up a pretty impressive race anyway.
  • Holy crap! Maybe I need to break my chain sometime. Awesome numbers!

  • Thanks all. A more comprehensive technnical RR to come later. Now .. Ironman Canada in 3 weeks! It always pays to have a "B" plan.

@all: I'm LUCKY to be able to race IM and go neat places, so I'm surprisingly chill about the whole thing. Remember ... we do this for fun!!!!!!!
@Kitima: Yes, DA 10. When I saw it snapped, I recalled your recent post and tried to channel my inner Kitima to McGuyver a fix, but it was in the category of "Major Mechanical."
@Linda, others ... your words ring true. thanks.
@Kevin - I'm putting together a crowdsourced Course Guide for EN folks in the next few weeks, and will cover Regensburg course characteristics, hotels, logistics, etc etc.

In the meantime, know that there is an incredible beer tent at the end of the race. I can't decide if my race or my hangover hurts more this morning. Drove to Prague this AM - no need to wait for a Kona rolldown unless it went ~65 deep - and then to Berlin for 5 days.

    Ironman Canada in 3 weeks!

Ah so.....oooo, that revenge will be sweet! image

  • Hey Dave,

Let me know if you need a place to stay in Penticton.  My crew and I have rented a large house 3km from transition and, we have a spare bedroom.

    Cheers,

  • Oh my. What a finish given the tragedy!
  • Alessandro, I might very well take you up on that - thanks for your note. Can you PM me your email address and we can talk prices etc etc through the back channel?

  • Holy cow Dave, that's amazing!!!! Why were ya holding back on us!! Can't wait to see how well you nail it in Canada! Do you feel recovered and ready? What are ya doing inbetween races?
  •  Thanks Nemo. race was yesterday, so I'm still shaky.  I'll start light running midweek, and hopfully be back on the bike over the weekend.  I'll probably start a new topic in the Training Forum for input on my plan ... I had some time to think about it yesterday ...

  • Painful is right!!

  • I hope you kept the chain, would make a great souvenir!
  • that chain should be framed and put up on a wall for all to see how you overcame one of the biggest hurdles in in IM!!

    Way to race!!
  • Dave -

You are a monster. It will come together for you, kudos on the back up plan. I recommend hooking up with Alessandro, he knows everyone, is the nicest guy, and full of good karma!

    You'll be back!

    P
  • @Team - Sorry to clutter the forumn!!

@Dave - Can't seem to PM hence this broadcast!  You can email me at, alescomm@gmail.com

  •  @ Dave - You may already do this, but, consider taking one of these babies along on your ride up Richter and Yellow Lake. About as much weight as three sips of water. I've never used mine in a race, but it's always in the bag, JIC. (I actually use a Blackburn which is no longer made).

  • Al, you´d best believe that I´ll be bringing an entire Local Bike Shop on every IM after my experience!

  • Dave,

As Coach P says you are a freaking monster.  You actually beat my time and had the chain debacle.  I bow down to you man!!!  Can Not Wait to see you destroy the course in Canada.  All the bad luck is over now and you can just relax and fly!!!
