I'm signed up for this one....sappy story to go along with it.
I am adopted and my parents both died two years ago within a few months of one another. On New Year's eve the year they both died, my husband and I were watching the Locator show and he mentioned that I should ask him to look for my birth mother. I just laughed and then showed him a website I have looked at only a couple of times that lists people in Louisiana looking for birth parents/children/siblings to show him it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. He pointed to one ad that was a woman looking for a birth sister born in New Orleans in 1960/61. He said, "Answer that one." I did and would you believe that I found my birth family???? In February I went to Baton Rouge and EVERYONE was there for the dinner. Aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters, nieces, nephews, long time family friends of my birth family??? Unfortunately, my birth mother died the previous February within one day of my the death of my adoptive father. They were buried on the same day, February 14th, one in Texas, one in Louisiana at the same time of day.
Anyway....I'm doing 70.3 New Orleans to whoop it up with my birth family. I have an uncle who is 81 and will be there cheering me on. He rides his bike his age plus 10 years every year on his birthday. This next summer he is riding across Alaska and then will only have to ride Hawaii to have ridden across all 50 states......
If ya'll go, I'm staying in the Hilton Riverside. Let me know...be fun to get together.
I'm about 90% going to pull the trigger on this one. I usually do the Lonestar HIM in Galveston TX, but I'm bored with it I think. The only thing good about Lonestar is that I don't have to spend vacation days to do it. NOLA 70.3, I would.
I am signed up. Last year there were supposedly a bunch of issues with race coordination-type stuff, but, I had several friends that thought it was great anyways.
This will be my second 70.3 (and triathlon altogether), so I am pumped! I am new to EN too, so I am hoping we have a good showing there so I can meet some of our team!
Just saw on twitter (PEMUSA) a $25 discount for NOLA70.3...IMNOLACLUB2010. I think I pulled the trigger about 2 minutes before I added them to twitter.
Hey ya'll....question. My daughter is 17. She is thinking about doing this one with me...what are your thoughts on a teen doing this at that age. She will be four months from being 18....maybe three months from Coast Guard boot camp..... The swim and bike will be no problem...it's the impact (no pun intended) that the run will have on her body at that age? Thoughts????
I would think that with 8-10 weeks of multi-sport training, if she is feeling good, she should be fine. It isn't the one time 13.1 that has the most impact I don't think...if she feels good through several weeks of building fitness, go for it!
This one is super flat and has tons of fan support (from what I hear)...so it should be a great first race.
I stayed in Marriott last year when I did it as husband has Marriott points... They have three closeby... like the Residence, the $$ and the regular kind!! within an IM athlete walking distance of downtown nightlife... or taxi over. Yes I wore a wetsuit btw. Murky Lake Ponchatrain looks so vast.. flat and windy and humid warm. it was in the 70- 80's on race day which even for me in Arkansas made it my warmest training day let alone race day! not a lot of crowd support on bike but yes on run towards the end as you approach the finish. so the run feels like a traditional city 1/2 marathon... the bike? feels like you are going into the bayous AND you are!!! not scenic at all, but hey I like flat and windy as you can zone out and ride aero! one cool thing, is you ride on the interstate, yep.... they blocked off traffic. you don't get to do that often! if you have done FLA? then the bike course is sorta like that in that it is boring to look at, some drafting going on and windy!! the run has the history of the houses to keep interesting and then you run out in some plain parts but with big trees in parks!! again, boring meaning not hilly and curvy so again, you can zone out and run... in my mind!! but oowee windy!! alongside the river which feels like you are running beside the beach!! hydrate!! huge # of people, makes you feel a little more anxious than a regular hometown tri!! and the transition area take a few minutes to get out of. not a big expo for such a large race though. the downtown finish? well sorta like IMKY if you have done that in that you finish in a neat restaurant area but it is New Orleans!! and has that flair to go with it! my bike split was one of my best but due to lack of water at last aid station and none in T2, started running dehydrated, and with the wind and heat not a PR on the run..... so not sure how to get heat acclimated for an early April race but from now on I always put water in my T2 due to this race last year!! yep I hear RD is gonna have it better this year. The staggered time trial start put about +++one hour from the pros to the end of the line so depending on which AG/start time you were, depending on how much water was left for you....also not enough porta potties for the 2500 people, there were 10 - 15 at swim start... so take your own TP!! smile. how to train? you need to be aero the whole 56 miles, so train up to that... you won't hardly change gears either so your legs are pedaling pedaling and the speed is all on you and not from downhills or uphills! just a few turns at 90 degrees so watch out cuz it seemed like inexperiened riders signed up for this one and didn't have good bike handling skills on those turns... I saw the worst BH skills ever. weaving out and in on the shoulders, stopping, well.. just bad so be aware.... and on the run.. hang tough.. and at mile 8ish, you can endure and gain some ground. m
I've done Galveston/Lonestar the last 3 years, I'm sick of it. Plus, they moved it to later in April, which means it'll be hotter and MORE humid than usual.

Thinking about it. Since last year was a yr of injuries, need to see how the next few months go. leaning toward YES if next 3 months go well

Anyone have lodging suggestions? I'll probably be driving in from Dallas.

The wife and I arec deciding between Glaveston and this one. Leaning towards this one.
I don't know about NOLA, but the Galveston one is really fun! I'm signed up for Lone Star this year.
NOLA it is!
